RE: G Wagen Treffen Proposal

Dave/Oskar, do you think we will do the morning tour of the caves or afternoon ?  I see they are on winter schedule with 2 tours per day.(90 minute tour).  I assume where we are camping will yield an afternoon tour unless we go on Sunday...which may not be bad as a final stop for me to break off and start heading home.   Include Richard and I for breakfast, we will settle on the $$$ at arrival.  This is going to be great !!!

Oskar,  if there are any parts/supplies you need from RNO please advise and I can pickup.

 Mike

RE: G Wagen Treffen Proposal

Just a quick thank you to Oskar, Jill, Mike and Richard for a great time at GBNP. Richard and I continued on to Toroweap, Mesa Verde, Durango, and Pagosa Springs and had great weather and good experiences in all those places too. All in all I put 2200 miles on the G in two weeks including my time in central Utah before meeting at GBNP. A fantastic trip, but good to be home now too. I'm sure Richard will have some posts to make when he catches up at home.

All the best,

-Dave G.

Richard and I continued on to Toroweap,

Torroweap is a pretty special place. It's a long ride out there, but well worth it. Killed a W460 steering dampner on that long wash board.

Were you lucky enough to get one of the two rim campsites? I've been out there three different times; and was lucky on each visit to get the low one closest to the rim.

RE: G Wagen Treffen Proposal

It was fun finally meeting Oskar,Dave(Hipine) and Richard (Kashi123).  Oskar cooked up some great food and it was mighty tasty along with the sights around the National Park.  Here are a few photos.

What's the story on the tree?

There actually are a lot of good shoes (some of them new).  Located in Middlegate Nevada, a Google search for "Nevada shoe tree" will yield a little info from blogs...here is the jist of it:

According to Rus Stevenson, who operates the nearby Middlegate Station Bar, located about 110 miles east of Reno, the tale of the Old Shoe Tree dates to the early 1990s. A young couple had been married in Colorado and was heading toward California.

As they drove across Nevada, they began to argue. Finally, the husband pulled over the side of the road, under the big cottonwood, and left his new bride there to cool off while he drove to the Middlegate Station for a beer.

After tossing back a brew, he returned to the tree and found his wife still hopping mad. In response, he grabbed a pair of her shoes and tossed them into the tree, then headed back to the bar for another beer.

After another half-hour or so, he returned to his wife. This time, they managed to patch-up their differences. Unfortunately, he found he couldn’t get her shoes out the tree and they drove off, leaving the footwear hanging from a branch.

Over time, others saw the shoes in the tree and began tossing old pairs into its branches. And thus, the legend of the Old Shoe Tree was born.

I'd remembered you saying that about the rim sites, but when we got there the only area close to the rim was the "Toroweap Overlook" where your picture (and the one on the NPS brochure!) is taken. There were two picnic tables there, but no fire rings and the area was clearly marked "day use only." The campground proper was maybe 3/4 of a mile or so back along the dirt road. There were nine sites in the campground, but none in any proximity to the edge that was at all like the overlook. Having a nice walk out to the overlook didn't diminish the experience at all (you can also drive).

I'm not sure what time of year you visited, but it might be a seasonal thing. The pit toilet at the overlook was also closed and there was a sign as you passed the "Y" to the campground that it was the last chance for a toilet. The NPS brochure does pretty distinctly differentiate the overlook from the campground though, so maybe this is something that's changed since you were there.
http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/upload/TuweepBrochure.pdf

Oh yeah, and my steering damper has been shot since before I owned the truck, so it didn't get any worse!

We drove in by a slightly more westerly route (the "clayhole route" in the brochure above), not the long way straight out of Cedar City, but down the west side of Mount Trumbull. On the way out we stuck to the more popular easterly route ("sunshine" in the brochure) which was really well graded. Both were like freeways compared to the Hole in the Rock Road I'd driven the week before south of Escalante, UT. The "clayhoe route" that we took on the way in was lots more scenic, passing through fields full of huge volcanic boulders, and lots of different kinds of landscapes. The more easterly sunshine route that we took on the way out was more or less just a nice dirt road.

The most entertaining portion was on the way in when Richard had his TOMTOM GPS hooked up and it trying to send us down every over-grown hint of a two track that would branch off to the West of our southerly route, and as we'd pass each one, ignoring its instructions to turn (I was navigating by the Topos loaded into the 276C), it would alterntely either add or subtract 20 minutes from its estimated travel time to our destination.

We didn't go out to the Lava Falls trail (2 sets of lava falls can be seen left of center in the 2nd of my pix from teh overlook linked below). Had to leave something for "next time."

FWIW to anyone looking here, my pix are on the thread Richard started in the main forum

Sorry 'bout the wierd colors. Bad camera settings. This is why we shoot a RAW copy too to save me from myself.

PS - now that I compare landscape features in your pic vs mine I see that yours is taken from farther north. So I guess the answer is no, there were people in the sites off to the right as you enter the campground. We drove over there, but the only site left over there wasn't good so we went around to the left. The sit you used must have been one of those that was filled and we couldn't explore. I have to admit I was surprised at the number of people we found there. Maybe something to do with the fact we were there on the equinox night (totally by accident), but one night there were 7 sites filled and the other they were all filled. Like the Lava Falls I guess....another reason to go back!

My shot was taken towards upstream from the rim campsite. You had to climb up on the rocks next to the campsite to get it. Sounds like they closed that off and have made it for day use only. It was a very neat place to camp - provided that you're not a sleepwalker.

Yep. Found my answer here:
http://www.camparizona.com/Campsites/NorthCampsites/Toroweap%20Poin...

Looks like June '07 they made the overlook day use only. I have to say I like it that way. Its close enough to walk to from the camping area and very nice to be able to be alone there without finding people camped, which they surely would be if it were still allowed.

We definintely trod some of the same ground, up the rocks to the east of the overlook. It would be fun to go back some day and do some hiking. Turns out there are more trails around there than I thought. I was focussed on the steep one down to the river and pretty much wrote off any idea of hiking. But it looks like there are two or three 1.5-3 mile hikes in the area that would be neat. Might have to head out there again some time.

All the best,

-Dave G.
