Rusty - Looks like we have found just about the same places. It does seem odd that in our great state, larger than many countries there are not more off road opportunities ... Seems like there should be trails allowing us to move all over the state without pavement ... It should be like a bike path or equestrian trail system ... There do seem to be quite a few off road parks - General Sams and Spring north of Houston. Big Bend has some possibilities, but you know getting to West Texas is not the fun part ... By the time we travel that far we might as well go to New Mexico or Colorado ... It is high time for some kind of a gathering especially before it gets too hot. I'd really like to replace my HVAC with a VintageAir system if the 280 is going to be my DD again this summer ...

When I was young we lived in El Paso (basically a 2 day drive from where I am now) At that time you could drive for days in the desert on all kinds of roads/trails without even seeing anyone, much like you are talking about. Don't know if it is still like that but it sure was fun, we would drive for hours looking for indian artifacts and actually found several good sites that were our own personal "finds" which we returned to often to keep digging for more artifacts.
Later we moved to Arkansas and when I started driving I bought a 4 wheel drive truck and discovered power line trails just outside of town that went all over the place, they were great 4 wheeling (maybe not legal but I never saw anyone on those either) I am sure those places still exist, just need to get out and find them again.

the old trails in Big Bend are really nice for light offroading. Nothing challenging, but the views...

I bet Big Bend is great, unfortunately it is about 700 miles from where I live in Texas!
