RE: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

DesertStar - 7/30/2009 11:49 AM

OK...I will put in for vacation of October 12 thru 16.  I plan to stay the week.  Does that sound about right Karl ?  Last year, I think we had 3 possible meeting places or some type of itinerary mapping out where we were camping everynight(so anyone can drop in at any point)....I think with a small group we dont need to follow such an itinerary other than meeting places and times.

Mike

That sound great, I was thinking of driving the "old lost road" Alan and I were braving last time. This could be a small project rebuilding it a bit more, it is a little nifty trail worth working on it. Maybe the big strong gut from Atlanta would be nice to have in our labor pool......

Whooa, the mailman just delivered the perfect tool for this adventure - Thank you Dai!! I'll try to teach Mark J how to work it for eight hrs a day

I do plan to be at the Owens/Death Valley area already on 10/10 and stay maybe at the Papoose Flats overnight or a place nearby. Let's look for possible meeting places on our "dry run" and besides that you should be the one to coordinate this new adventure with the others - as I'll be lost in the Brazilian wetlands for a while.......

Alan, no brakes are necessary for the little Adventure Trailer just those blinking lights......

Karl

As long as you bring the beer, the bratz and the cheese, I will bring my back and a bottle of ibubrophen.

Re: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

I thought it would come in handy on your tool rack next to the shovel. I really like ours as does PK. The head is easy on and off and is well designed. I look forward to seeing your mounting design. The handle even has a hole in it.

It is small, Mark, so a tiny bottle of ibuprofen is all that's necessary. But you are tall....

Mark,

in this case the bottles of beer will be small as the little Wieners we serve......but please remember Dai and I still hold the mineral rights for anything you dig up.

Are you coming out here? Still looking for a ride?

RE: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

Why improve the road?  It is a bit of a challenge and DV needs some challenges.  I do however have a score to settle with the monster rock in the flats that pretzeled my tie rod.

Perhaps we should look into that alternative access to Papoose Flat.  That ought to be an adventure!

Re: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

Karl

Mike called me yesterday to invite me to join him. He mumbled something about the team must keep training for next years Dakar rally. He also mentioned that he would be letting me drive some as he will be hopping into a certain white G from time to time.

If you need someone to talk to I can do a little G hopping of my own and ride a bit with you. Just remember I'm cheap but not easy.

Dai

Will you be joining us this time? It would be great to see you, my friend.

Mark

Re: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

Mark, October is when we harvest winegrapes here in Oregon. I will be a busy guy through November. Things look good this season, we just had record setting temps here and it looks like the fruit handled the heat OK. I have to go hop on a tractor.

Cheers,

Re: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

So 12-16 is the time frame? The wife wants in, so what mama says, mama gets! That's a slightly better than tennative confirmation for myself, Jessie, Abigail and baby Hannah. We are still doing Moab the end of sept, so if anyone care to join on that one as well, let me know. -James

RE: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

Mark, I thought it was "easy, not cheap". Ohwell, I guess I can stop saving up then.

Had I looked at this thread on the 23rd when you said you were comin, I would have offered a seat as well. What a guy that Mike.
His pillows are softer anyway. Don't read into that.

October 10-17 should work. I'll probably only tag along for 5 days or so. Will have to figure out my exact schedule later.

I'm assuming that we'll try to hang in one place for a few days at a time, eh? Day trip exploring with a base camp? Would definitely be easier on my butt. I don't want to have to schedule surgery again when I get home. Darn flat G500 seats!

I should stop writing now.

Dai

Great news on the harvest bad news on not being able to come. I guess I will possibly see you on 20010 at your place.

Steve

As I mentioned to Karl I will be jumping Gs in DV (just the Gs Steve) so maybe we can ride for a while. What are your pillows like?

No offense (I know you probably didn't take it that way but just for the record). Even though the ride was as smooth as silk, I was already disadvantaged with a compromised lower end. It wasn't until the long ride home that the seats suddenly felt like concrete (slight exaggeration).

I think those seats were made for very large people with a little extra junk-in-the-trunk. American market perhaps?

Hey, I resemble that remark.  But seriously, I say the same thing when I drive/ride the 2008....seats firm and flat.

RE: Death in Death Valley

Sad story.  From my guestimate of their location, there is running water not far from where they were, certainly less than a evenings walk.  On the other hand ... I know DV well and often go out alone.  But I wouldn't go out into DV in the summer without a second vehicle.  Lots of things can go wrong.  Many of those could kill you in summer.
