RE: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

stevegsmith - 9/4/2009 2:55 PM Looks like entry point for me will be Tuesday morning either at Tea Kettle or just before you leave camp. I'll be the G driving at 15 miles per hour with the car cover on. :boink:

Protecting the paint, eh?  You need one of those protective front end car "bras".  Not just any off the shelf bra though.  This calls for a performance art project.  To wit:

Go to a Goodwill / Salvation Army / etc, second hand store and buy all the (ahem) well padded bras you can find.  Stitch them together to provide good coverage while leaving a little "exposure" for the "headlights" & grill.

You'll be stylin' and safe.

Just thinking.

I like your thinking AM. I'm off to Salvation Army on Tuesday. Better get working, this may take some time.

RE: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

Is anyone coming from San Diego that might be willing to pick up a Unimog muffler and bring it to DV? I'd repay with beer or wine or maybe share some burbon ;-). -James

I don't see much "stay-in-one-place-for-more-than-a-day" time on the itinerary. Do you Karl?

Steve...is this a bad thing or a good thing? I am all ears for suggestions. I do not recall staying in one place very long on any DV trip I have been on.

Just curious...

Yeah, shotin the breeze one day with KV-dawg and we both noted the amount of daily travel and thought it'd be nice to hang for a day and a half or so somewhere. Realizing of course that we're only talkin a week plus or so of traveling with soo much to see. The idea probably makes more sense on a slightly longer trip. But maybe, if a great camp is found, near a hiking trail (or rainbow or something), then maybe we'd stay put for a second night. That way you get a day of lounging, hiking, resting, etc.
I know, I know, we're also talkin DV and it could be hot. So lounging in one spot for a day, as opposed to driving with shade and little breeze, might not be attractive or ..... whatever.
So...that's all....sorta...I guess. Just thinking, cloudily, but thinking.
Don't get me wrong. I love exploring and moving but there is the driving time just to get there and back.

RE: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

I hear you Steve, having popular or well known meeting, camping and starting spots as outlined will enable those who want to hang somewhere to catch others following the itinerary at another point pretty easily.  For those coming long distance and joining mid-week, they need to be assured someone will be at arranged meet points....does not mean everyone needs to be there.  If all participants were starting at same time and day, than I would say we could plan more on the fly.  Big groups with people coming from all over at different times and days puts a little more logistics in the mix.

As we get closer and see who actually is coming and when , we can than reduce the number of "known" campspots/starting points to accomodate them for joining us and plan the days off the cuff thereafter or before.

I was just handed the task (along with Alan)of putting together some sort of interesting route to enable people to join in at different times as their schedules determine.

Once I insure those that are coming later in the week have a place to meet up with the group we can blaze new trails and camp wherever.

Mike

RE: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

I'm certainly open to changing the itinerary.  The big challenge with DV trips is the huge distances between the major attractions.  This particular trip has been set up as bit of a "Grand Tour of DV".  One strategy would be to restrict the trip to one quadrant of DV, and explore that area more thoroughly.  That would make for more opportunities to rest, hike or get in trouble exploring little used roads and mines.

RE: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

Alan,  that sounds cool.  Let's solicit an alternative itinerary focusing on a given area with fewer camp/meeting spots to act as a basecamp for 1.5 days or so. This will make it easier for those to come at different times and and allow for more "plan the day as we go" opportunities.

With that said, we need a bit more input as to what areas of the park of interest to everybody.

RE: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

You guys are awesome and you've done an awesome job so far for sure. Your efforts are greatly appreciated and I'm glad you two in particular are doing this.

I don't know enough about DV to say, "hey, let's go there". But, I'll definitely take a gander at maps and books to see if something strikes me.

Talk soon.

Thanks again peaches.

RE: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

A rank ordered list of "places I want to see" and "things I want to do" would be really useful.  Just PM AlanMcR and DesertStar.

No promises of a democracy here, but some input would probably make this process work more to the satisfaction of all.  I'm just happy to get away from it all and go explore.  The trip would be perfect if the school system would just let the kids out for a week.

As long as folks are PM'ing, another useful tidbit would be how far you can go (offroad) before needing to hit a fuel stop.   Mike and I are probably at the opposite ends of this scale, but some calibration would be helpful.

You just figure it out......and I will follow you guys - anywhere!

Just make sure nobody starts off with bad tires in the first place......like the tracker here......

The wildlife might be a bit different than outside of the tent here, could be just confined to Steve G. and Mark....

Looking forward to the DV trip and seeing you all

RE: Looking for a few good souls for a Death Valley trip

What kind of radios do you guys prefer for communications? I have a 2m/70cm with FRS capability, I don't have a CB. So if any of you are hams, lets decide on a couple of channels to use. Id suggest 146.520 (national simplex) and maybe a back up simplex, how about 147.500. Do any of you have a national repeater directory to pick out a few repeaters in the area of DV? Obviously we don't need anything other than FRS while together, but while approaching the area and finding folks it would be fun to make contacts from further out.

How about a list of call signs from attendees to.

I can't wait to meet you guys and see some awesome land!
