On my last adventure in Baja Sur with Harald in Dec 2012 the problem with the transfer case shifting came up again. Remember in Aug of 2009, I noticed a wire problem at the 6-pin connector to the transfer case shift motor and had repaired the two power wires then. Trying to meet up with Harald in San Ignacio, I had to use the lockers and the Gelände gears to make it back up onto the highway. Back on the asphalt, no street gears for me, a few shift error messages and then the computer settled on the following: Transfer Case in Neutral! After a couple miles driving on the highway in the low range (max speed 45Mph) I tried to shift again. To my surprise the Tc shifted into high.....and off I went. Since then, I always had the "Transfer Case in Neutral" message displayed together with an annoying beeping, whenever I open the driver door. The Star Diagnose system showed some communications errors, it is still the same shift motor and I believe there is nothing wrong with it. I planned to replace that complete connector and found out, a short wiring harness complete with connectors on both ends, is available from MB - cool. This last weekend I finally try to find the place where this short harness plugs into...... And I love my 2004 W463....with only 160K miles The Star Diagnose system reset and re-learned the TC ECU, the long missed "H" is displayed again - just wonderful. The truck got serviced, Spring cleaned and will leave on 2/22 for another Baja California adventure. Karl

I found a bunch of German coins in the back seat of mine. Of course much fewer coins because beer was cheaper in 1980. Glad you got your H back Karl, and doubly glad you're off on more adventures to share with us. All the best! -Dave G.

It is a real time OBD-II gadget that you can link up wirelessly using your Smart phone (Iphone and the like) to view real time diagnostics and clear codes. It plugs into the OBD-II port under the dash. It will by no means replace the star but the code clearing is a plus. It might be worth a look into... Edited by BonitaBeast 2/19/2013 10:42 PM

Really, the 2004 is not any more complicated than a 460, and it is arguably just as reliable. The repairs and diagnosis is just electrical rather than solely mechanical, and clearly can be solved by any regular guy with the right tools.

There are several OBD-II readers/code clearers that will talk to smart phones... I picked up an ELM327 WiFi reader (it creates it's own wifi for your smartphone to join - also available as a bluetooth) and use the DashCommand software on my iPhone. If they clear up and not showing up again, you are ahead of the game..... But what to do next, when the same error code comes back? There are no links to the Star or WIS......what/who are you doing/calling then? Karl Edited by fernweh 2/20/2013 1:49 PM

There are no links to the Star or WIS......what/who are you doing/calling then? Karl Here's my step-by-step process: 1. search p3 forum for codes and see if my problem has already been addressed here (many times, it has!) 2. if code is not found on p3, post a question about it 3. wait for Karl to post an answer with the proper method of repair (actually, I wait for Karl, Dutch, hipine, J.R., Chris, etc etc etc including all the other great members of this forum who provide so much detail and information!) Anyway, I was just adding a tip on a simple tool for reading/clearing codes as asked by thebigblue...

Though I have just ordered for the TC control Module and the TC motor, does any one have a step by step replacement method with pix, please. I have the CD manual but for some reason it wont download on my computer.

Every morning before I take off I cycle my transfer case into low and then high. I have had zero issues for over 3 month. Based off the theory that the transfer case motor cycles every time the car starts, and eventually the module loses what gear the transfer case is in, which is what causes the blank screen. I'll be replacing my module with an updated one once I find one on eBay.

It wasn't in neutral and before shipping, my brother mentioned he used the hand brake (emergency brake) and the noise and message went away. the previous owner also mentioned "annoying beep that showed up on occasion".. I didn't really know what this meant until trolling through the forum one night and finding this thread. A day or two after the purchase, I was just trying out the buttons to see what worked and didn't work, discovered wouldn't shift into Low. Since I couldn't think of anything else to do, sat there for a while toggling the switch, when it did eventually shift and the L and H appeared. After cycling a few times, the thud from when it switched back into H (and around my feet) went away too. The vehicle has 57K so I suspect the switch wasn't used much but I'm not sure how the previous owner/their mechanic cleared it or the extent of the problem for them.
