The needle wants to jump and act erratically. It's the MPH version and I tried an old KPH version and it worked fine so its not a dry cable. What I suspect is that either the worm gear or one of the teeth gears is worn. What I cant figure out is how to get it apart. There are two screws on the back that hold the guts to the case, but removing them only leaves it wiggling in the case. I've found many articles on the net on how to repair the gears in these old mechanical VDO speedometers, but none address how to remove the guts from the case (the metal can and glass face). I'd just as soon not break it completely, so I figured one of you guys can tell me just what I need to know. It's probably something simple, but I just dont see it. Thanks for any tips. Bruce

Done this copla times; using flathed screwdriver and piece of cloth carefully open the back side of the aluminum locking ring which holds the glass to the body, once open you can take the guts out and repair; after the repair carefully close it in reverse order. No rocket science there.

Todd here re speedo repair. I got as far as you did and it appeared that the speedo needle needed to come off to slip everything out of the case. Well I couldn't see how to remove the needle without bending it to worthlessness so I took the unit to an old timer VW bug guy near me and he pulled it to pieces, discovered two broken teeth that were causing the intermittent problem of bouncing needle and no odo or trip meters. He removed the broken teeth and now I have speedo but no trip. Seems tough on fuel consumption but great on resale value--not clocking miles. So that does come apart but he won't tell me how. I'm guessing that the needle is glued into place with some epoxy. Just got to figure how to remove the epoxies hold without buggering up the needle, stem or entire unit. These are repairs meant for a watchmaker.

Bluegg, I just did this repair on my 93 463 (500GE), there was a 12 teeth gear that split in half that controlled the trip advancement. This was an easy fix with no epoxy needed. Go to this web site:http://www.odometergears.com/products/Mercedes-Benz/S+class+%28126%29++79-91+Gas/52 Look at their info, call them. They are very nice and will send you the gears you need. I hope you have the old broken one to count the teeth. Good luck. AGuess
