463 Steering Box Adjustment?

Is there a steering box adjustment specification for the MBUSA steering box? I may do it myself or I may have the dealer do the adjustment but if its like the adjustment on Jeeps you would just slowly adjust the inner hex until the steering wheel tightens up. Any reason an MBUSA 463 steering box would be different to adjust than the 460 or a Jeep box?

Check the resident "temple monkey's" (G-AMG) writeup at the other site http://www.benzworld.org/forums/g-class/1290300-photo-diy-pitman-ar...

Is that what you're after?

Re: 463 Steering Box Adjustment?

I saw that but I believe that is for the 460? I've never seen the torque wrench thing on the steering wheel either. I always just adjusted the hex slowly until the steering wheel wasn't as loose. I always leave a little slack in there. Can I just do the same thing on the 463?

Re: 463 Steering Box Adjustment?

Most MB systems are anti clockwise to tighten. (The opposite of most other maufacturers) I suspect the 463 would be the same. If it is adjusted with no play it will destroy itself. It is critical that it self centers coming out of a turn. Make the adjustments very small and check it until you reach your goal. Those units are very very expensive.

Dai - thanks. I will just take a little play out of the box. Too tight will eat up the gears but it is important to avoid having too much slack also because that can cause damage outside of making driving difficult.

RE: 463 Steering Box Adjustment?

Be Very Careful with this adjustment! I have found out the hard way. If your truck has a lot of miles on it, which is why you are making the adjustment in the first place, it wears a groove into the shaft where the seals are. If you move too far out of this groove, it will cause you to leak Power Steering Fluid.

If you make the adjustment, keep an eye on the steering fluid and at the very bottom of the steering gear for access fluid. If it leaks, you might have to adjust it back, or replace the seals.

I experienced this on my own truck.

Re: 463 Steering Box Adjustment?

I think I will probably leave it alone and then have the dealer take adjust it if necessary. On american cars its pretty standard to do this at around 100-120K just to get things tight again. Also standard to do TRE's and such. Since this has an expensive box I will leave it be. Thanks all.

Re: 463 Steering Box Adjustment?

LOL I forgot about this post. I adjusted the box shortly after this. Thankful I did. Its been nice and tight since. Just this year I put on a new tie rod and drag link with all new joints. It took a little playing to get it adjusted but no issue since then. A little more sensitive than adjusting a box on a domestic - I don't recommend doing it unless you've done it before.
