| Will W463 wheels fit on w460?
My current wheels look like garbage, Europa chrome plated over the alloys & now the chrome is peeling badly. It must have looked great when new, because they also color matched the inner spokes as well.
Is it cheaper to restore pitted and corroded alloy wheels, or best to find a newer set of stock wheels that some rap star removed to install biggie wheels???

in general - the larger the rim (reduces the tire's side wall height), the less ride comfort, the less off-road capability
the ET of some 463 wheels in combination with its rim width will not suit the 460
for example ET63 on a 7.5" wide rim will not work on the 460 - you will need spacers to push the wheel out farther,
ET43 on a 7.5" wide rim will work on the 460 however |

Have them beadblasted and powder coated. It is usually about $75 per wheel. The MBUSA early alloys can be found for under $200 per wheel, but they are 18" so not ideal as Harald pointed out. It is pretty common to see the 18" rims on 460's, IMO it is a bit of a biggie wheel itself on a early 460. As far as I know, in 1980 all G-class left the factory with steel wheels. The 460 15" alloys look nice though and there is a good selection of tires still available for those rims.
For the 18", try ebay or google search "g500 wheel" site:craigslist.org
Serpe has the old alloys on gwagenpreserve, but you may be better off refinishing your own. Dutch may have some advice on getting the old chrome plating off. |

the other cars on the road are not there to make you happy
for that you have your own vehicle
I sold a car once where the buyer requested that everything that was usually chrome to be gold plated. Including the lug nuts.
I did not ask him why - I asked him for a sizable deposit
man was he happy when he took delivery
aren't we all proud that we are so strongly individual?
then why would we tell others what to do? |

I agree. There is nothing wrong putting some bling to a G. I like to see them used off-road, but chrome rims wont make it any less (or more) capable. |

There is a guy on ebay (just search g500 wheels) who will have you send in your wheels and at the same time he will send you chrome wheels (not your own). He then chromes those wheels and so on. Requires a deposit. Chrome would look good on mine but I live in road salt country and I drive on the beach. No chrome for me. I have W463 wheels on mine. I know it makes for a rough ride but I live in suburbia and I have steelies to swap if and when I go offroading.
Does anyone have a link to where I can get lug bolt locks for my W463 wheels?

My bolts are:
14mmx1.5, 45mm Shank, R14 Ball Seat, Hex 17
Would the 40mm be too small?

since Mercedes specifies 45mm I would get the bolts with 45mm sahnks. The link you found has the perfect locks. |

I've got 13 bolts that are for sale in the "for sale" section. I should probably measure the shanks anyway... if you're interested let me know. I'm assuming i'm selling them for a decent price but didn't check what they are new... but shipping is included so it may be a virtual give-away... there were from my et63 18's...
For reference, heat treating reduces the strength of the wheel so i'd recommend against that. (it essentially anneals the material). I think painting is probably a better option and more repairable too. People certainly do it, so it's not like they'll fall apart, but i've read more than once about people having wheel bending issues on sports cars after powder coating them.

Powder coating ovens operate at a max of 450 deg. F, and normally cure around 375 deg. F. The higher temperatures can be used though. Stress relieving of steel occurs around 1100 deg. F. For aluminum it is around 650 deg. F. Of course these are for construction grade structural alloys.
The alloy in wheels is different, and from what I just read (this post got me interested as one of my businesses involves metals), and a special cool-cure process must be used. This powder cures around 300 deg. F. Apparently the alloy in billet/forged wheels becomes brittle around 400 deg. F.
So you need to find someone with the right powder and make sure their oven doesn't get too hot if coating aluminum wheels. I wouldn't think these temps would affect steel wheels, but you may want to check deeper and still use the cooler curing powder. By the way, when talking about chroming, there is the decorative chrome that we most often see, then there is the "industrial hard" chrome. The hard chrome is (from memory) stable to around 400 deg. C, and can live in abrasive salt water environments. It isn't "self-leveling" by nature, so it isn't as shiny or smoothe as decorative, but it is great stuff.

FWIW, I sell and service electroplating chemicals and processes. I would never, ever buy an aftermarket nickel/chrome plated alloy wheel. (Nickel/chrome is the decorative "chrome". The nickel is what makes is shiny. The chrome top coat is very thin - almost transparent, and is there to provide some color and corrosion protection to the nickel layer. Nickel, while shiny, will yellow without the chrome top coat. |
