Nice work Bram!

Nice work on the winch, Bram. Don't abuse your alternator that way though man. You'll cook it in a hurry. For light puling around the yard, a big battery can probably get you pretty far. If you find yourself draining the battery, you need to upgrade the alternator. Fernando posted some good links a little while ago.

I forget now, are we talking about a diesel truck? If so the little twistable idle booster cable might be enough to hold the idle up to where it'll charge. If not, try a hand throttle cable for such occasions. Some folks use an old bicycle gear change lever. Some buy one built for the purpose (this one clamps to the shifter lever of a Jeep).

http://www.redrock4x4.com/handthrottle.aspx

For anyone following later, I wouldn't have painted the drum. The cable needs to grip the drum as well as transfer heat to it. The paint can only interfere with both.

Nice work bringing the old winch back to proud service again Bram. You really stuck with it through many challenges where others not made of such stern stuff would have pitched it in the trash can and bought something else.

Re: Rotzler rebuild

@ Chris. Please put me on the mailing list as well, bramree@hotmail.com, thanks!

@ Dave. With an electric winch, an alternator upgrade seems to be more important all of a sudden indeed. I was still planning my elec. fan project, so all of these extra electrical devices call for a little heavier alternator.
It's a 280GE I'm having the Rotzler on, so no idle handthrottle knob on it. I put a piece of wood on the accelarator pedal yesterday which did the trick.
This G will get a diesel in the near future, so that problems will take care of itself! Still wondering what kind of diesel engine I will choose...om617a or something more modern...

Haven't thought about the paint on the drum. After unwinding the cable after the first pull, it had already gripped pretty good and I could see the marks in the paint. I've read you should always leave a like 5 windings on the drum when pulling, I guess it will hold fine for now.

Thanks anyway for the compliments. Always nice to have a project finished. Time to move to the next!

Great job Bram!

Thanks Jeremy, now mostly working on my 300GD where I want to install an hydraulic winch when the time comes.
I would like to have an old-style winch-activation button on the dash to have it look original, so I'll do some searching on that the following time. Will let you know when I've found something.
On this 1984 280GE where the Rotzler is mounted, the newer style switches are used, and that one was already present.

Thanks Bram. I was thinking the other night that I haven't been able to find ANYONE with the early style W460 switches and a Rotzler winch switch. How can no one have one???

RE: Rotzler rebuild

Good info Chris. Since it came up here, this is probably a good place to post some info I shared with Jeremy in an off-list request a little while back.....

If you want to try and find the plug that fits the socket that's on the Rotzler, this one I have has the following numbers on it.
Cast into the cable clamp portion is:
ESC
MS 3057
4A

and printed around the periphery of the knurled portion that locks the plug to the socket is:
VEAM 3406 VG 95234D10SL-3PN

Sorry for the crude picture quality, but you can get the idea and the numbers above will be what you're after anyway. These guys can probably help:

Re: Rotzler rebuild

Thanks for posting that info Dave.

I heard back from Glenair...they can make the male sockets to order (either solder or crimp style). $100!

Anyone, feel free to PM me for more info, I have the specific p/n's and such.

Why not just share here where it's available to all regardless of whether you're available at the time someone comes looking or not? Just a thought.

Will Glenair sell the components without making the assembly? or are special tools required to asssemble? I only found them with a Google search as a possible source. There may be others for sure.

Good luck!

Re: Rotzler rebuild

I got the info off my work computer;

"The part you want is ITS4106F10SL-3P for crimp termination or ITS3106F10SL-3P for solder termination. Please see catalog PDF attached. This part will give you the clamp, backshell and wire seal grommet and is fully compatible with the VG number that you reference. We can build these up quickly (2 weeks or less)."
