Another stinkin oil leak...

After having the turbo replaced due to oil leak inside it, I noticed a small spot of oil on the driveway after leaving it over night.

I checked the topside engine compartment to make sure It isn't coming from the turbo/inlet etc. I got underneath and traced it to what looks like the rear head gasket on left side of engine. It looks like it is seeping out at a fairly slow rate. I watched it while the engine ran as well. I haven't noticed any loss oil on the dipstick and don't have any oil in coolant and vice versa at all.

How serious of an issue is this/how long can I let that go and will it get worse?

I have a picture if someone can tell me how to post it.

RE: Another stinkin oil leak...

If you're still under warranty, let the dealer deal with it.

If it's not something you want to tackle yourself, find a reliable Indie. They are usually less expensive than a dealer.

Yeah, I know.

I have an independent mechanic, and unfortunatley he knows my vehicle all to well.

I am NOT a happy camper right now with this vehicle.

Re: Another stinkin oil leak...

Ok, just an update, and looking for some input...

Mechanic and I put the vehicle up on the lift and watched it run. oil is definitley not spraying everywhere, it's still a slow oil spill of some sort. I am not thinking it is a head gasket anymore. The oil was coming from the valley of the motor from some sort of "drain pathway" and coming down the back of the motor.

We thought at the time there was a lot of oil spilled in the valley of the motor when the turbo was changed out.

It has now been 9 to 10k miles, and I am still getting a small drop of oil on the ground when left overnight. There is no coolant in the oil, and vice versa. When I changed the oil 4k ago, I checked for water in the oil and there wasn't any. Have been checking the oil for contaminants every couple weeks or so.

Also Engine seems to run ok.

Drove the thing to California and really didn't use much oil at all.

I am baffled/annoyed.

If anything I think I might have a leak in a valve cover gasket possibly?

Is it possible the oil would be still draining from whatever spilled out during the turbo change?

What about the oil level sensor? And where is that?

Re: Another stinkin oil leak...

I had oil running down the exact sample place when the rubber gasket between the intake crossover pipe and the turbo was not seated properly. A new gasket and seating it properly solved the problem.

The crankcase vent also comes in there, and it has oil in it. Is it properly fitted and is the gasket for it in place?

Re: Another stinkin oil leak...

Crankcase vent is good. That is one of the things I checked.

The seal at turbo inlet is new. I replaced that last year cause I thought that was the reason for all the oil on the turbo. Well, the turbo had to be replaced and I still have the oil leak.

I'll go over everything again when I change the oil soon. coming up on 5,000 miles.

It's freakin weird. I figure if something like a headgasket was going, I wouldn't have been able to put another 10,000 miles plus that included a harsh drive from coast to coast.

I need time to get into the motor deeper. there is lots of stuff crammed on top of that motor before I can see stuff like the valve cover where it could be leaking from etc.

Be VERY CAREFUL if you have to loosen any of the fuel lines. They operate at well over 10,000 psi, and will create a hydraulic knife that can cut through a finger in milliseconds when loosened.

Re: Another stinkin oil leak...

You are absolutely right. I used to work on older diesels in the early 90's but these things are way different. I think they only had 500 psi in them or something like that, and that was bad enough.

Besides the safety issues, it's way more computery too.

I can't wait to get moved in to my new house and get my garage set up etc.
