G-class receiver hitch

Over here in Europe, we are not familiar with the receiver type hitch that I saw on US trucks.
I did like the system however; modular, easy changes between draw bars and type of hitch couplings.

Therefor, together with my brother who has a metal working company, we (re)designed the original MB hitch with a modification to hold the draw bars square tube. Everything was drawn in 3D CAD, lasercut, welded and finished in black powdercoating.

See pics.
Pic 1: powdercoated finished product. There are still threaded holes on 83x56 mm pattern to directly bolt a European hitch to it.
Pic 2: original hitch for comparison, here a Rockinger hitch is bolted on, still be able to mount such a hitch on my new construction (83x56mm bolt pattern).
Pic 3: bought some draw bars from DrawTite from the US, also one with adapter plate where I can bolt my pintle hook on.
Pic 4&5: hitch on the G. Everything bolted right up, and trailer connector mounting is integrated in the construction just as on the original one. Happy with the result!

Bram

I like that. I haven't seen the stock version before either (your picture #2)
That looks like what you'd need to mount a pintle or NATO hitch.

Thanks for the compliments guys.
The pics in this topic are not visible. Was that a custom build hitch as well?

If there's enough interest, I could ask my brother to make a quotation when building a small batch of these.
Drop me a pm with your e-mail adress then and he or I will get back to you later.

Bram

RE: G-class receiver hitch

Bram,

congratulations to that good looking new hitch base.

After many years of towing with the firmly attached original MB hitch on my 300GD and now with the US style exchangeable square hitch, I have come to the conclusion that the firmly bolted down receivers are the best.

I have never seen anything wear out on the MB style bolted down "hook"
my G500 Oris square receiver has rattled from the beginning (I love the versatility of the receiver, but hate the rattle noise) - after a few years towing very heavy trailers, the square receiver is no longer square. Vertical play is dramatic, horizontal play is significant and the safety pin hole is no longer round.
Maybe the Oris engineers did not use strong enough components. But it seems more a universal design flaw of receiver hitches as clamping devices are sold all over. Just google it and you'll be surprised.

Our friend Karl dug up one of those things and gave me one during our last Baja trip. Now everything is quiet again and the receiver feels tight and safe. The way it should have been from the start.

So Bram, now is the time to improve on your design by incorporating something that will ensure the tightest possible fit of the hitch in the receiver (big set screws?)

Re: G-class receiver hitch

This is a problem specific to the Oris hitch, as I have several 2" receiver hitches on other vehicles that have the same types of use and strain, and only my Oris hitch has opened up with all this slop and play.

In certain ways these Oris hitches are well designed and constructed, like how they mount to the car, and distribute some load to the bumper mounts, but they are not so smart in the receiver section....which is a weak design.

RE: G-class receiver hitch

Looking at Harald's Oris, it appears there was more stretching going on than wearing or losing material.
Seems like Bram's design with the outside surface plane being perpendicular to the receiver hole would be less prone to stretching out or puckering like the Oris. If it were necessary to strengthen that a bit, seems like using thicker material for the receiver-hole plane would suffice. Or, just adding another key-holed plate to the front or back surrounding the receiver hole.

Re: G-class receiver hitch

Yes it is the metal stretching, that is right, there is no worn away metal.
Basically the metalurgy is not so good on that steel they are using.

that would be my guess as ive never seen even the cheapest u-haul receivers do this.

my other guess would be that the poster is trailer towing badass over wildly undulating terrain, and has probably flipped a few trailers in his day. thats not the damage of a hitch merely in horizontal sheer.

I think just about everyone that has a G and does serious towing has redisigned the standard hitch, I did and along the similar lines to just about everyone else that has, I was heartened by the enthusiastic comments I received and enquiries from the UK members, but I never made one for anyone else.
