Basically the metalurgy is not so good on that steel they are using. that would be my guess as ive never seen even the cheapest u-haul receivers do this. my other guess would be that the poster is trailer towing badass over wildly undulating terrain, and has probably flipped a few trailers in his day. thats not the damage of a hitch merely in horizontal sheer. :) Nope, I don't offroad with trailers other than around my property real slow in low gear. Nope, I have never flipped a trailer, although one of my trailers was flipped over in a huge mudslide at my house...but not while attached to a car.....used the unimog to right it back on its wheels. Nope, Nope, Nope.....but I do use a motorcycle rack, and that has something to do with it, and otherwise, I do haul heavy loads, but not necc. more than the hitch is made for.....like harald, typically cars and jeeps, etc.... I did haul my CAT backhoe attachment once, that was the heaviest ever.....brought it to Palm Springs from NorCal on Harald's trailer. The hitch on our Land Cruiser gets the same treatment, and it has been on there since 1994, no stretching, no bending, no problems. So this Oris hitch IS the problem We have been selling the Curt hitches, and have one on my neighbor's car, and it also tows excavators and tractors and heavy loads, and so far no stretching and no problems......not bad for a $225 hitch vs. $600-800 for Oris. We ( gwagenpreserve.com )are currently making 460 and 463 rear offroad/overland bumpers with integrated 2" receivers.....we have been testing the prototypes for 7 months...... stay tuned the first will be done in about 2 weeks..... I found following picture in the W463 installation manual. Is this a common mounting pattern for the connector? If so, someone got some dimensions on the large bolt hole and the bolt pattern of the four mounting holes? Also, when this pattern is cut out in a 6mm plate, will the connector fit as my 7 pin European style connector is mounted as shown in my pics (first post)? It it also referred as a 7-pin RV trailer socket. We have integrated this part in our OEM Type W463 Trailer Hitch package. Our Hitch design (for W463 1990 up to 2009) does feature a very heavy duty receiver tube compared to the Oris Hitch, please have a look at the pictures. http://www.g-wagenaccessories.com/products/TrailerHitch.htm The large hole diameter for the trailer socket is 1.87", the top notch is approx. 0.75" wide and 0.1025" high. Looking at for example the product overview of Pollak (http://products.pollakaftermarket.com/category/connectors) I see a lot of different style connectors. All the way from 5 to 9 pin connectors. On the 'rv-type' connectors I see there are 7 and 9 pin versions. Can someone inform me a bit what is more or less used most commonly on G-wagen type applications? What type connector is standard on US (imported) 460/461 or 463 G-wagens? Looking for some options to include some optional type connectors in the hitch. Thanks, Bram | ||

From these you can buy adapters that convert to 4-Flat and 5-Flat which are fairly common in the U.S. Your link showed 7-Way which is 7 pins, not 7-blades which is different. The way 7-blade is really 6 blades around a center conductor pin. For the grey market, the 460/461 and 463 appear to all use a variant of the one pictured in this link http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=20997&po... . It is my understanding that this is the European "common" trailer wiring connecter like our "7-blade" is here in the States. There is a Mercedes part number listed on the last page for the male end which is what connects into the G. It sounds like you should buy the Mercedes male connector, add the European wire convertor and then add the 7-blade connector at its end. Then all you have to do is buy 7-blade adapter down to 4-flat or 5-flat. I don't think the Mercedes trailer wiring can support a 9-way connector as there does not appear to be a dedicated electric brake wire. Edited by J.R. 9/23/2013 6:49 PM | ||

First version as seen in these pics; based on the original Mercedes hitch bracket I got on my G: ] Original Mercedes version which gave me the receiver hitch idea: ] Ordered some drawbars from the States: ] ] ] ] I used this hitch for about 2 years, worked perfectly and towed both my military and normal trailers with it. Then I sold it to someone in the States who was desperate about fitting such a receiver hitch on this 460 G and was planning a large road trip with a military trailer. So helped him out, but left me without a proper hitch again This however gave me an incentive to design 460/461 receiver hitch 2.0, with some improvements over the first version of course! See CAD drawings below on how this v2.0 is going to be: ] (US socket bracket) ] (Euro socket bracket) The following features are now incorporated in this design: - Hitch USA version suited with bracket for electrical US connectors: 5, 6 and 7 pin type connectors - Hitch Euro version suited with bracket for electrical Euro connectors: 7 and 13-pin connectors - Redesign kept weight under 5 kgs for keeping the shipping costs down - 16mm (little over 5/8”) hitch pin now with 90 degree bend, to prevent it from interfering with the electrical connector - Kept the 83x56mm bolt pattern with M10 welded nuts for permanent mounting of European hitches - Incorporation of 16,5mm holes for attaching clevis or metal eyes to hook up towing chains. - The rest of the hitch is made of 6mm sheet metal and designed like the original G hitch, only reinforced with extra metal plates to construct the 2” receiver hole. - The finished product will have a very durable duplex coating, consisting of an electrophoretic base coat and a black powdercoating finish coat (RAL9005). - The hitch pin will be electrogalvanised. - The hitch will come with mounting hardware (4 x M14 high quality bolts and nuts) Within a few weeks we want to start with production for a batch of hitches for those interested, I of course also need hitches again for my G's!
