You drove 5 miles with your red battery light on without noticing? Yes AutoZone would have belts but they might not be metric sizes and be a few millimeters off, which is fine because you have some room to adjust. What was your water temp showing when you realized you lost a belt?

I didn't see the darn light in the bright sunlight. Only time will tell if it did any damage!

RE: M110 Alternator Belt Size?

Turns out the head gasket blew. The car leaked coolant steadily a day later parked in the garage & blew white smoke as I loaded onto the flat bed tow truck.

Anyways, what brand head gasket do y'all recommend? On my MGBs I used felpro with the silicone rings around the passages.

RE: M110 Alternator Belt Size?

You can just ask for the alternator belt for a '79 280SE. That's what I did when mine broke some years ago. I was walking distance from a tiny town that had a mom-and-pop garage, and the guy had one, so the size must be common enough.

PS - Hmmm.... check that.....I can't guarantee that I asked for the belt that way. I noticed my alt light right away and stopped within a quarter mile of where it came on, so I may have been able to find the old belt and use that to get the replacement. I think I posted on BWF when it happened. I see good info above from Mike to help in this case though.

RE: MB head gasket

I've used only the Victor Reinz [sp?] ones in the MB diesels I've rebuilt (much tougher life than a gasser's HG). Working great so far with about 50k miles on one motor and 15k on the other. It was the part a trusted indie MB mechanic with a big, satisfied return-customer base sold me, so that's the one I used.

RE: M110 Alternator Belt Size?

Going to the new "DIY" section, I ran across my old post:

http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=12811&po...

It looks like the brand my dealer supplied me was--> CONTI-SF AV10 X 960 La, as the M110 has a Alternator Belt- 10mm by 960mm

Suprisingly, the other TWO belts I got in a MB box were OPTIBELT(a German brand) , and GATES (a USA made you can get at any Auto-Zone type place).
