Re: BBS Split rim ( armored G's )

I agree on lugs--same black as wheel. Centercap makes it all look OEM but seems to be off in color from the wheel.

Re: BBS Split rim ( armored G's )

Looks good!. I have painted mine now and will be mounting them on my G this weekend. Have done all bolts and hubcaps in black. I'm surprised you could mount such wide tires on the narrow 5.5J wheel. The wheel bolts were expensive - cost me alsomost as much as the wheels - cost me $30 each in SA

What tyre pressures can you run these wheels down too?

Your truck looks great! Did you get the bolts from MB? Or BBS? Why the high price...I recall once trying to get bolts for the 7.5x16 "Atik" rims and they were very dear (a HWA part, AMG only) but it turns out S-class bolts will do the trick, if you don't want the shiny crown.

Re: BBS Split rim ( armored G's )

From local MB dealer - could have got them from Germany at a unit price of arround $10 - but the shipping from Europe to here is generally minimum $150 !

I forgot to mention, the S-class bolts were 17mm not 19mm as per the originals, so that might complicate things with what equipment to carry for spare tyre-changing.

RE: BBS Split rim ( armored G's )

I have had to get the correct 19 mm head bolts , thats also why its more expensive - the 17mm ones are half the price but will not hold the centre caps on.

Any suggestions as to how best to point this wheel?
I want to paint it black - Do I paint it completely assembled with existing stainless steel bolts? or paint it in piece parts ? How do you paint the stainless bolt heads?
Peter

Hi Peter,

Are the 15 bolts on the locking ring held stainless steel bolts?

Did you just take them apart and repainted them as an assembly?
Looks like you got a good deal on these.
Are you running 235/85 R16 on these now?

RE: BBS Split rim ( armored G's )

Here's a set that I was able to take home.

Also a picture from the 1979/1980 original fitment of the armoured Polizei G's.
The set came with matching run flat inserts from Hutchinson. Also produced around 1980.
Rim is pretty light (10,5kg); run flat insert is very heavy (15,5kg).
Partnumber A3304400202 is still known in the EPC, online prices are listed around E 2400,- per rim (!).

I need to find a nice tire for this set.
Rim size is 5,5J x 16", so tire choice is limited. I bought the set because it's Original G stuff and pretty rare. Otherwise a 5,5J is not a prefered rim width.

There is a sliding seal behind the bolt-on ring.
The bolt-on ring has got a o-ring in the rear side.

Re: BBS Split rim ( armored G's )

Hi Bram sorry for the late reply but I don't seem to be getting notifications anymore.

I don't quite recall what the bolts were as I replaced them all - they did not seem to be in good condition , The correct part no is N304017010047.

Re: BBS Split rim ( armored G's )

Are those the original rubber inserts ? I never got any. I am running mine tubeless without a problem . Made myself new O-rings using superglue to attched the two ends to each other - no problem thus far

Thanks Peter!

The (15) bolts of the ring on my rims are 8.8 quality from a local hardware store so it seems.

I would expect the original bolt to be of higher quality.
Did you get that partnumber out of the EPC or from BBS? Anyway thanks very much for saving me a lot of searching!

As the rims can still be ordered, I was wondering if BBS still supplies parts for it.

Thanks Harald,

I consider this set a small piece of G, BBS and Hutchinson history.
Didn't know Hutchinson went this far back, nor that it is produced in France.

Both rims and run-flats have production dates on them from late '80's to early '81. See pics as well.

A small comment on your overview list #12: http://www.rubicon-trail.com/G-Class/wheels/start.html
The weight I got when using a spring balance was 10,5kg. I will use a scale when I get one, but the 5.0kg doesn't seem correct.

I did also include a picture to see the sliding seal behind the bolt-on ring.

Gr. Bram

RE: BBS Split rim ( armored G's )

Part no from EPC. Did you get additionally a nylon ring that seats the tyre to rim? ( Made by Michelin )  It seems that its not compulsory as air is still maintained without it.  I fitted 10.9 non stainless bolts .

Hi Peter,

Again some excellent info; I didn't realize the EPC would show a breakdown of this rim. Have to master that part of the EPC where I can look up parts directly from partnumber...

Anyway, all rims I bought got the large sliding seal that indeed seats the rim against the tire. You can see it on my last picture (IMG_2053).
This seal is indeed a bit sturdy, didn't realize it was nylon, nor that it was made by Michelin. This nylon seal would be #23 on your picture I suppose.

Which seals are #53 and #59? Afaik, only 2 seals are part of this rim.
Also, I assume #47 is the run flat insert.

Amazing to see, wonder how much these run flat inserts cost

RE: BBS Split rim ( armored G's )

59 is the O ring . Not sure the difference between 23 and 53 as  I have only one of the two on mine . I doubt you can get the rubber insert or the nylon rings anymore. They might have a price for the wheel but I doubt you can actually get one.  I see you have a fifth spare wheel which is interesting as the armored vehicles did not come with spares - they did not even have a mount on the back door for it.
