Any idea as to the cause? By the looks of it it all started with a short circuit in the electrics box on the RHS of the engine bay (LHS as you look at the engine). It is a common fault in older Gs, where the positive mains interfere with the battery box. That is a point I check regularly because it does not seem to be too well isolated. I don't know what could have caused it in a G as new as that (I believe the battery is in the boot).

I've been lurking for some time here, checking out all issues with G's Recently, I purchased an 04 AMG I live in NH We had snow the other day, so we went driving around x-mas shopping. All fine until later in the day. when the ABS stopped working. Seems it began when I went to use the high beams. They went on for a second and then all hell broke loose, "se workshop, check coolant level when hot, check high bean, on and on. I get it home, shut it down and have three malfunctions displayed in the cluster. One is the common Tele-aid, the others, I didn't have a chance to figure out. I checked fuses and found a 30 amp (i think socket #27) and a 7.5 amp burnt. Socket #A I replace them, fire up the engine and the fusebox started to smoke! In a panic, seeing how the battery is out back, I pulled all the fuses around the one I replaced and the 7.5 in socket A I then ran for the fire extinguisher!! Holy crap! Today I removed the negative terminal, then remove as much of the dash in the area as possible, looking for any electronic devise or burnt wire, nothing. Nothing under the driver kick space and nothing looked or smelled funny under the drivers foot well. I removed the headlamp switch and fully opened it up looking for the smoke source, nothing. There is nothing in that area to check but wires. I put it all back together, with the fuses back in place, reconnect the neg. terminal and within a 30 seconds, more smoke!! Now I'm freaked out! I can't even exactly remember what 30 amp fuse was burnt to begin with. My truck could have looked like this one if I left the shop for a few minutes! Yikes! Any help or suggestions are desperately needed??? David Edited by NHDave 12/17/2013 4:51 PM

Socket #A 27 Goes to the control unit under the drivers seat. Controls all things seat related along with the steering column memory functions. The A thru H fuses run along the top of the box (from right to left, A being on the right) You shouldn't have a fuse in the A position, it's for the air circulation pump on a diesel. If it's the B fuse, that's for one of the ABS control module circuits and for the stop light switch -- and it should be 10 amps. Given that it started with an ABS warning, take a look at that stop lamp switch up on the top of the brake pedal and make sure it's not broken or shorted out somehow.

But first things first. I figured out what was the culprit!! Holy crap, it was the illuminated door sills! The 7.5 amp fuse wouldn't blow and the wires start to cook! Do you believe this? That car in the beginning of this thread didn't have to burn,,,, if only? OMG, what a damn relief! Stressed out fot a day and a half! Thank you all for replying. David

I would also find your fuse chart in the owners manual and compare the amps shown to the actual fuses in the G. I did that on mine when I first got it and found several fuses that were a much higher amp than they should have been. If the fuses are not correct, they will not blow and your wires will burn and melt. AGuess
