Wiper Motor Diagram/Replacement

Hello all!

Recently I noticed a clunking sound when the wipers are used. Upon investigation, I discovered that the wiper motor was loose and it appears that one of the three bolts has fallen out.

From looking at the part online, it appears that the motor is bolted from the inside. I've read that others have replaced the motor without removing the dash, but can't find how it was done.

How do I go about tightening/replacing the bolt? Can I access it by removing the command unit?

Thanks in advance!

RE: Wiper Motor Diagram/Replacement

I knew that was the only solution for the linkage, was hoping there was an easier way to fix/replace the wiper motor.

Oh well...

Thanks

RE: Wiper Motor Diagram/Replacement

Please note that the motor is actually mounted from the engine bay, I recently had the same problem, my three screws that hold the wiper motor to a plate were loose, there are 3 bolts that hold the wiper motor to the "frame", once these are removed, it is a tight fit, use a mirror and you can get a number 10 to tighten the bolts. Oh was I soo happy I didn't have to remove the dash. The motor is hidden behind the hood sensor and hydraulics for the diff lockers. And small hands would work best here lol

Re: Wiper Motor Diagram/Replacement

Related question: what would make a wiper go prrrrrrr on its way back?! Only that it's dry? We don't exactly get lots of rain in Dubai to keep the rubber soft...

Re: Wiper Motor Diagram/Replacement

with the blades lifted off the windscreen, does it make the same noise? If not try changing out your blades to another brand? More plausible is that the are stiffened by your heat? I get the same problem in summer and then it rains.

Thx. Yeah, from experience here I'm guessing it's the heat! And yet another summer has just kicked in! Hell on earth over here! The yearly reminder to stop sinning

Re: Wiper Motor Diagram/Replacement

Ok can anyone comment on the wiper sound in the video link above? My thought is motor bolts but if I can check the linkage more easily I will. Thanks.

I think I heard the noise from the wiper blades. Do you have another set of wiper blades to test? lets try if you hear the same sounds when you lift the arms off the windshield then turn the wipers on.

RE: Wiper Motor Diagram/Replacement

OK I just changed the blades but they could be clunking around a bit. To me it sounds like it is in the firewall somewhere high up but one could not tell that from the video. Will try your suggestion and report back.

Thanks,
Karl

Re: Wiper Motor Diagram/Replacement

Nope its not the blades. Play somewhere in the linkage or motor.

Re: Wiper Motor Diagram/Replacement

I took the footwell apart and crawled under there then switched the wipers on. The sound was coming from the mounting flange of the driver's side wiper, which was moving back and forth with each wiper stroke. The mounting bolts had come loose for some reason. I was able to retorque them with a u-joint on a 14" extension on a 1/4" ratchet; the bolt heads are 10mm as someone conveniently mentioned above. I say conveniently because the bolt heads are almost impossible to reach being directly above the steering column and brackets for the dashboard, so even getting a socket up there is a challenge. Anyway, no more clunking sound. The wiper blades still make the usual noise when they change direction on the glass of course, but no clunk from the firewall and no more play in the wipers when I move them by hand. I don't know why they would come loose but maybe the car saw lots of washboards or something in another life. It only has 50k on it; everything looks brand new under there.

If a photo is wider than something around 900 to 1000 px, DUTCH will remove it at sight.

And it's done with a simple request and fair warning. See here:
