RE: Rubber fender flares?

Just for the reccord, mine is an '86 as well and it had the fiberglass fender flares.
Anyway, here's my attempt at rubber fender flares. This is not a finished product, by far, but I just wanted to see how well it will flex/mold in the right shape and how it will look in general.
As i mentioned before, I'm not happy with the way it kinks in the sharper bends, and how you can see all the mounting hardware.

Very cool to see. Even if they are not the most ascetically pleasing they can for sure take more abuse than the fiberglass fenders. BTW, I like the winch mount. I need to do the same - I picked up an H1 HMMWV winch I need to figure out how to mount (now that I trashed the bumper I need a new one of those too).

Re: Rubber fender flares?

Even though I bought material for all 4 wheels, I only made the front passenger side fender flare. Given my results I decided to start looking for a good deal on a set of stock ones. I'm still looking

If anyone is interested to furtehr pursue the ideea, i just want to mention that these rubber fender flares are usually available at parts stores for the big rigs ("18 wheelers"). That's what they're actually intended for.

Is that H1 HMMWV winch electric? If so, make sure it's not 24V...unless you have "special" plans in mind

The "winch mount" as you call it is actually a complete bumper, specially made to fit that winch. It's finally operational! I only tested it so far by anchoring to a walnnut tree in my back yard and dragging my G on concrete One of these days I'll have to re-open the build thread on the setup, and post the updates.

Yep, electric. Indeed it is the 24v. Ha ha, I do have some plans in mind but nothing material yet. My plan is to have two batteries; one for camping and accessories and another for cranking. I'll probably wire something like the CUCV military trucks just with out the secondary alternator.

Re: Rubber fender flares?

Very interesting. My G has flares in which they screw into the fender. And you can see the screws when you look close to my G. They are plastic. I have not seen anyone else with them. I will try to post close-up pictures.

RE: Rubber fender flares?

At some point I want a set of probably 7cm MB ABS flares on my 460 300GD as well.

Regarding installation, I was wondering where and how it bolted on to. I got some rust spots on the wheel arch and it would save me some work if I could cut away the fender arch and install the flares above it. Would that work? Since I will be driving 33" tires or maybe 35" for off roading, a bit larger fender arch would come out nice I think compared to the wheel size (aestheticly speaking that is ) I don't know if it's relevant, but together with the flares, I will need some inner fenders to prevent all the moist and dirt clogging up in the rear section.
On the picture I draw my intented cutting line.

Thanks, Bram

Re: Rubber fender flares?

if you cut away the red outlined area, you won't be able to mount any original flares!!!!
you can run 33in or 35in tires but i recommend ORC or spring spacers
like http://g-wagenaccessories.com/index_files/Page339.htm along with HR 30mm spacers.
Body lift would be great also.

As for the flares, Borbet will give you more width than MB ones but won't be enough for 35in.
Is the local law required to have the tires tuck inside the flares? like in German and Japan.
If so, u need to use the wide flares from MB.

Re: Rubber fender flares?

I'd look into pictures (and maybe even sourcing of parts) of the icelandic rigs as they cut fenders instead of lifting so you'll notice many of those truck have flars that are right up against the rubber trim that runs down the side of the truck. I think you'd need to go to 35" to make cutting back the fenders worth it all as plenty of people run 285/75r16 equivalent size without cutting or lift... which are usually referred to as 33's even if they're techincally smaller.

Re: Rubber fender flares?

Although the Iceland folks go pretty extreme with their flares and I have no intention to mount that size rims/tires, I do follow their belief to rather make some room upwards the tires (bodylift or cutting fenders) then lifting the suspension (too much).
Also I really don't like the look of tires being too big for the wheel arches. See Suzuki Samurai or LR's Defenders for examples, it looks silly I think to see a too big tire under small wheel wells.
Luckily the G already have quite big wheel wells, so for up to 33" no direct cutting is required, but for 35" it may come out a little better to enlarge the fenders a bit.
For me it's more a practical point, cutting out the rust and covering up the remains with some nice flares.

Does for example the Pur version even have the 460 'ridge' around the fenders? Since these have flares ex-factory.
Anyway, curious to see how these flares are mounted to the fender to contemplate my options.

Thanks for your information,

Bram

Re: Rubber fender flares?

I have oversized tires on my G and have been looking into diiferent flares without going as extreme as the iclander flares. Another possibility I have come across are the guerilla warflares from wildhorses 4x4, they fairly square, flexible and can cover a larger opening than my stock flares.

Re: Rubber fender flares?

Nice find, they do look like they could fit the G form-wise as the Bronco kind of has the same fender shape.
Do you already got them on your car? Using black bolts would look neat on the G, not into those shiny bolts

Re: Rubber fender flares?

I don't have them on yet but I think that is the direction I am going to go ( no shiny bolts ). The shape is close and I think if you used two sets of front flares they would fit better and wouldn't have the body line molded into the flare like the rear ones.

Re: Rubber fender flares?

What is the width of the wild horse flares?
To have the 35in tires tuck under the
flares, the width has to be 11-12cm.
This is including 30mm spacers to clear
the frame rubbing.

Stock flares are abs and are flexible. Only Orc flares are
Fiberglass. I don't know why your stock flares
are hard and cracked

See my posting for narrow and wide flares
Money will be the only thing that stops u.
Best value for $$$ are the Borbet.

http://www.clubgwagen.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2407

I was looking at some 290GDT pics yesterday, and saw these pics.
These look like to be even more narrow flares than the 7cm 460/461 type. Or is it part of the inner splash guard?
Anybody installed these or got some more info on them?

gr. Bram

Cheap rubber flares?

I don't think these were posted earlier.

Saw them a few time in real life, look pretty good actually on a G.
