I just disassembled that side to replace the axle seal and the split swipe seal with a solid swipe seal; and I discovered a thoroughly bent inside seal holder - that soft metal ring that is the first piece to fit into the swivel ball, right behind and to support the swipe seal. It seems that, when I installed the split swipe seal a while back, I did not properly line up the points of the large and hardened metal staple that holds the ends of the split swipe seal together with the holes for that purpose in the inner seal holder. As a result, when the outer seal holder was tightened in place, it pressed the points of that large metal staple against the flat of the inner seal holder and bent the devil out of it. The bend is severe enough that I could not properly straighten it for reuse with the solid swipe seal. I sure am glad that EuroTruck is only about 30 minutes away. One more reason to not use the split swipe seal!

I believe it is green grease. Pay attention though, because the G63 uses many other greases and lubricants that are designed for high temp/high performance applications that are different from what a standard G-Class would use.

The axle ball uses simple waterproof grease. The grease should be clear/yellowish. The coloration matters because it is used as an indicator. This grease is visible on the chromed surface of the axle ball. If you see clear/yellowish grease (probably dirty) then things are OK. If you see runny black grease, then it tells you that the CV joint inside the axle ball has broken and needs to be repaired very soon. If you use a dark grease you won't see the color change and you will wind up buying a new CV joint rather than just the boot. EDIT: I should have pointed out that it is unlikely that you need grease. The total fill is 500g when starting off with a dry cavity. Unless the seal has failed and you see lots of grease being drooled out it is likely to still be full. All this grease does is ensure that the swipe seal is lubricated. If you are worried about how full it is, unscrew the fill port and stick in a finger. You should be able to feel around to the surface of the grease. Edited by AlanMcR 9/13/2016 1:23 PM
