RE: Gunther Holtorf's 23-year road trip

Very interesting, I would like to follow his tracks, it seems like a great adventure. Leica and G-wagon's seems to go nice together

Outstanding! Both the achievement (like passing that bridge) and all the beautiful pictures. Wish I was younger today...

Re: Gunther Holtorf's 23-year road trip

I met this guy about 16 years ago when he visited the Mercedes factory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with his G-wagen. Since then I'm in contact with him once a year and he updates me about his latest trips and future plans. The plan is that his G-wagen called "Otto" will end up in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, probably next year. But you never know for sure how long he still will enjoy his awesome trip. He is a great G-guy.

Re: Gunther Holtorf's 23-year road trip

My friend isn't even a crazy car person and it practically made her cry it is such a beautiful story. Then she ponders, "how does one finance being on the road for so long even when living so modestly?"

Re: Gunther Holtorf's 23-year road trip

He visited already 200 countries. The UN lists only 193 plus 12 not yet listed makes 205 countries on earth. Perhaps he is just visiting the last 5 countries before he and "Otto" retire.

Re: Gunther Holtorf's 23-year road trip

Given that he's been at this for 23 years, I'm guessing that several of those country borders have been reconfigured between visits.

DIESELS will do it!

Partially true. You forgot the key word I think: OLD "dieseld will do it"

Regardless, it's nice to see that some have the passion, posibility and the right company to do this with. Can't get much better than that!

OLD "diesels will do it"

So I guess this is why:
Diesel is everywhere, even where there are few passenger vehicles there will be machinery for farming, generators, trucks, which will be diesel
I believe you can even use some aviation fuels?
Diesel is safer to carry
Old diesel engines are inherently stronger than old petrols
Old diesels can cope with a wider variation in fuel quality
Old diesels can run mineral and vegetable fuels
Old diesels are inherently simple with a higher likelihood of successful remote repairs
Old diesels are less likely to break down in the first place
For many countries there is a lot of old diesels around for parts and expertise - lots of old Mercs still going in Africa

Have I missed any?

Counter comments:
New diesels have better fuel economy (much more important these days)
Petrol is a lot more widely available now, but even so...
Old parts are harder to come by.

So if I was heading off on a similar adventure, would a 1980's W460 still be the right choice? How about a new W461?
