Just like the topic says - had to take off the door panel and remove most of the plastic sheet, and the little original adhesive that remained is dead (in fact, the plastic sheet was already about 3/4 unstuck). What kind of adhesive/material should I be using to re-attached the sheet? From the archives, I saw Vlad recommended windshield installation liquid rubber, but that's about the only suggestion I was able to find. Edited by koly 11/14/2012 1:46 PM

I was thinking it should be something that allows for the plastic to be pulled away again in the future... not sure headliner spray would work for that?

There is a pool sealant that comes in a roll, and it works very well for your exact application. I have some at home, and I'll post specifics when get home.

It's a bit spendy to do 4 doors but you will notice the sound difference and it's water proof. serious pain in the rear to remove however.

Leakmaster Butyl Tape works like a charm. It's 1/2" wide and comes in 15 ft rolls. Lay down a strip where you want it to hold that plastic sheet. Press the sheet in place. If you need to go back into the door, just pull the plastic sheet away; and the Leakmaster tape stays there sticky and ready to hold the plastic again when you reassemble. Here's a link to the manufacturer's store. http://store.leaktools.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=... Pool supply houses probably have it, too; since it's used to seal underwater light conduit in swimming pools. I've also used it to hold those small wood trim pieces in the front door interior panels.

I have always used "Spray mount". It allows you to reposition the plastic at a future time. I thought something like butyl tape was what was originally in there from my old P3 searches... but mine looked much more like spray-mount style. I like the butyl tape idea alot better, though. I think that's the same material Land Rover supplied with their removable hard top for their D90s (at least in NA)... amazing how well it held up over the years and weather, if it's the same stuff.

Braingears - 11/20/2012 12:08 AM I used gorilla tape (duct tape). Worked perfectly. That's what I've used in the past, and it gets the job done. The only drawback I've found is that it leaves a nasty adhesive residue on sheet metal if the tape is removed later. I took my door apart again recently and experienced this when pulling back the plastic sheet. Having run across this discussion, I ordered a roll of the butyl tape and will give that a try on reassembly.

My Butyl tape arrived and I used it to re-attach the plastic sheet - worked great! And when I was removing my rubber hose that guides the door lock pin through the hole and it pulled off before the pin made it through the door, the plastic sheet was relatively easy to remove from the butyl tape which stayed put on the door (at least where the door was sufficiently clean). Thanks for the solution! Edited by koly 12/6/2012 1:26 PM

I think I was the one that found this BT-15 butyl stuff a while back so i've been using it for a while i still like it. I looked for many different sizes and this appears to be the most useful/practical size for our purposes. Part of what makes it nice is that it never hardens, so it always stays a flexible and tacky. If it gets dusty it looses it's tackiness but I suspect you can clean it with alcohol at a later date (if it gets detached or dusty) so if you're going back into the door panels to do repairs it'll still be useful. The way the plastic sticks to it, it's better to give it a quick pull than to go slowly. If you pull it fast it'll come of more cleanly... pull slowly and it's more likely to stretch and stick. What-ever the factory used originally was useless junk. Maybe useful for headliners, but it doesn't seal for crap in the doors and turns into an annoying dry flacky mess over time. From a paint store i bought a little 1" diameter wood roller (for wall paper or paint cans i think) and it's nice to press the plastic into the butyle to flatten it a bit and get a good seal. I never thought of using it for the door trim pieces... good idea. Edited by ewalberg 12/7/2012 2:32 PM

I found a solution on a VW forum for this: Blutack http://www.vw-resource.com/plastic_sheet.html I was skeptical but it seems to work and it is easy to obtain. Main thing is to make sure the surfaces are reasonably clean.
