| Water aspiration on M113?
This week I took my G to local dealer for routine service that I couldn't do myself. Since I change my own air filters I asked what the activated charcoal packets located in the plastic engine cover were for. They didn't even know they were there much less what they were for! I couldn't even figure out how to remove/change them. After much discussion with M113 mechanics they figured the charcoal was only on G's. After some computer searches the charcoal/carbon packets were determined to be only on G's to remove obnoxious smells on G's because sometimes the engines would put bad smelling gasses out the intake! THE REASON THE M113 PUTS OUT GASSES IS BECAUSE IT HAS A MECHANISM TO PREVENT WATER ASPIRATION! My owners manual makes no mention of such a system in fact it actually warns against water aspiration will ruin the engine. Has anyone ever heard of such a system? They were not blowing smoke up my backside. Also, if the carbon packs need changing the entire plastic engine cover has to be replaced. I can't imagine that activated carbon would remain active very long in that environment. Does anyone have an idea what the purpose of the carbon packets is and does the engine have a mechanism to prevent water aspiration? |

Lots of Mercedes have activated carbon filters. Our 98 E has one. It has nothing to do with the engine though. As far as preventing water aspiration, the trick is to stick to the approved depth, which I believe is 20cm. Practically speaking you are good to the middle of the star on the grille, though your carpets are at risk. The design of my particular G has the intake in the front at about the height of the star. Despite that I've washed a wave of water over the hood and up against the windshield without killing the engine. Sure scared me though.
Ooops, just noticed that you've for a later 463 model. Better keep it to below the door sills or you'll short out the interior electronics.

That was mighty close. I know of 3 300gdts which have required new engines due to water in the low air intake |

Mine got a new engine (short block) back with a PO in Germany. The paperwork doesn't say why, but certainly could have been water ingestion.
Edit: The factory did offer a workaround for the low intake. It came in the from of a reinforced air filter element. It was designed so that when water plugged up the filter it would hold firm and cut off the air, thus killing the engine. Without the reinforcement the filter distorts and the water gets past and into the engine. My G came with the special filter installed, but I'm using the standard E300D filter (cheapskate).

Inside the fender if you take out the plastic fender liner, you will see a unidirectional valve for diverting water fron the air intake piping. This is the only mechnism I know of for preventing water aspiration. It is also not part of the air intake system I have seen on any Merecedes sedan. |

With the M113 air intakes being Out-Facing, and way up high above the Fender, just below the Hood, doesn't this make it pretty difficult to suck in a sigificant amount of water??
Aren't we talking the HOOD being under water?? |
