This is a new one...

Opened up the front passenger door panel (adding a courtesy light, replacing the bellows, fixing the wood strip trim, lubricating the locking mechanism), and found this weird red tube...

Initially, it was only visible near the upper hinge - after fishing around, found the bottom that wasn't connected to anything, and followed the upper portion to right near the inner door handle, also not connected to anything. The odd thing is, the tube appears to be using a factory body-panel mounting clip on the interior sandwiched part of the door skin (circled) and also runs through the zip tie that's tying some wiring together...

Thoughts?

Isn't that the tube that the tail of the electric window drive cable slides into.

As of my discovery, there is nothing running in/through it...

Yes. Roll the window down and find the wind man. Find the wind.

In a G, it's virtually impossible not to find the wind, or have it find you...

The stamped indentation of the sheet metal is for the hand crank mechanism as found in earlier G-wagen.

The red tube, as indicated by Alan, is used to guide the loose end of the window regulator cable. It might be dislodged/slipped off the connection and the cable is not running through it any longer

Is this the same system used for the sunroof setup, I had a bad experience when the cable for the sunroof no longer wanted to go into the tube.
Every-time I opened the roof the wire would disconnect the tube. Some rinsing a spraying with some fresh synthetic bike-chain lubricant did the job. The tube looked like a gasoline tube though, rubber with a outer sleeve of woven material.

RE: This is a new one...

Sure enough - the red tube is supposed to be hose-clamped to the metal tube that houses the regulator cable near the bottom of the door. The hose clamp was still in place, and it was still holding a small section of the red tube.

Good to know, and thanks to thebigblue, I have a good idea why my sunroof has always made a weird noise...

Speaking of doors/door panels - on preMBUA Gs any tips on replacing the plastic nuts that hold the lower half of the door panel & map pocket in place? Two of mine on the driver's side now simply spin with the screw, making the screw's removal (and therefore the door panel) a bit of a PITA. I'm also guessing they won't be the last to exhibit this behavior

Sun Roof Cable Noise

If it's making a slapping sound in the left rear corner of the truck, the cable has probably slipped its guide tube. Attached is Europa Int'l's solution to the problem.

I was able to fix mine without the drilling part. I lubed the inside of the guide tube with white lithium grease, used a small hose clamp to hold the tube in place and routed it around to the side of the truck. Noise gone and no problems with that fix in 11 years and 50,000 miles.

G,,day not sure on yours, but I fitted nutserts also known as rivnuts. then used metalthreads.
those names may not be available to you.
they are effectively a threaded pop rivet.

RE: This is a new one...

Well, the red tube problem is solved. Replaced the old red tube which was starting to dry-rot, with a 3/8" poly tube that I heated up and stretched to fit over the metal tube's flange. Anything smaller in diameter would have been troublesome to try to fit on the flanged metal tube that houses the guide wire (read: impossible without removing the entire assembly). Clamped down the new hose and now, no more 'racheting' window noise!

Thanks to all for the i.d.

My old passenger door map pocket was flapping around so I got a new one and stuck it on with the little rings. The two screws at the bottom were long gone. The holes in the panel are pretty big oval things, maybe 3/16" by 1/4". It would take a very large screw to fit that hole. I'm wondering if there were nuts fitted to the metal in the door that the map pocket screws landed in after going though the panel? Or were the screws supposed to screw into the panel only?

FYI I found a place in kentucky that makes the little plastic snap clips for the door panel so I replaced them all. While the panel is off; seems like about half the old ones were broken. Ebay. Ten bucks for 20.

RE: This is a new one...

The factory sticks these square plastic blobs into those metal holes.  They then accept screws from the door pockets.

Re: This is a new one...

Regarding the little widgets that accept the door panel screws... I used these little gems. It took a little force to get them in the door, but they did not turn when the trim screw was tightened.
