Rear side glass dimensions

Does anyone have exact dimensions of the rear side glass of a G? I mean the glass on the sides of the cargo area. I need exact dimensions including the radiuses, something suitable to feed into a CAD program to water-jet some aluminum for a pair of flip-up compartment doors to replace the glass. I could pull the windows and use them, but I'd prefer to keep them in place until I have something in hand to replace them with. Thanks!

Re: Rear side glass dimensions

I never use AM/FM radio, only Sat radio, so not too worried about it, but I figured I could add an aftermarket one tied into the rear of the radio if it ever became a concern.

I betcha Serpe could send you a tracing pretty easily for a nominal fee, but pulling those windows is pretty easy. 5 min out and 15 min back in.

Re: Rear side glass dimensions

Yeah, that might be the best bet. I'm still considering if it'd be suitable to plant the frame of these doors in the stock G window moulding, or have an inner frame that sandwiches the outer frame to a new rubber moulding and ultimately the frame of the window opening. I like the design the dude at Wagongear.com uses http://wagongear.com/shop/flip-up-hatch-window/ , but I wonder if it could be simplified a bit since I don't intend to use the glass like he did. My goal is to redo the lay out and design of the rear cargo are to better suit my needs as a family of four camper/travel Wagen, and having flip up doors would ultimately add to my better utilizing the vertical space available in the G by creating compartments that are only accessed from the outside.

Never imagined there'd be another request for these!

No fee required.

Nice is right! Now I'll have to check if that would work for me. Talk about tunnel vision, why did I never think about moving the hinges?

Thanks for sharing!

Hi James,

you might consider the solution Lennartz is offering as well:

Looks like plug and Play,

Re: Rear side glass dimensions

Wow, nice looking stuff there! Thanks for sharing that site, I'm not sure why I've never seen it. I cringe to thing how much those would cost and ship to the US. Also, I don't like the fact that they are mechanically fastened to the tuck. I'd prefer the ability to remove all/most of what I add to my G when it comes time to sell it.

I looked around for prices and was unable to find any. Do you have any idea what they want for those?

Re: Rear side glass dimensions

Hi James, Funny I have also been looking at doing exactly what you have in mind.
I have a window and also have a CAD drawing (although not yet in hand). I will try get it and you can modify as desired.

@Previous postings: Some awesome ideas and worth looking into although pricey especially if having to import and our weak currency.

Jambo, thank you for that generous offer! That would help out a lot. My wife has me on home improvement duty for a few weeks, but after that I'm fired up to work on this.

RE: Rear side glass dimensions

I would absolutely love to do this with the larger rear windows in my SWB. It would make getting to stuff much easier, especially as I plan to remove the rear seat. Been thinking about it for a while. My only concern is any loss in body stiffness or introducing any flexing since the new opening wont be fixed.

Here are some inspiration photos from Land Rovers which have had these available for a while:

RE: Rear side glass dimensions

The biggest problem I have with most the solutuons is the fact that the hinges are on the outside and mounted on the body.

What about something with these hinges? These could be bolted to existing holes on the inside.

Well that's what I want to try achieve.

Re: Rear side glass dimensions

Jambo, that's my feeling as well. No need to start drilling into the truck if it can be avoided. I like those hinges, my only issue is I will be building compartments inside and I need the hinge arms to not interfere with compartment walls and such.

What's your feeling about placing a hatch frame (of the same dimension and thickness as the glass) in the stock window weather stripping, instead of sandwiching it around the window frame. Do you think it would be rigid enough to handle the pulling open of the hatch?

PS Sorry for the repost, I'm typing from my iPhone.

RE: Rear side glass dimensions

James that was my first plan, that why I will get the exact dimensions of the window.
BUT that way you will always have a bit of a water/dust problem at the seals.
After seeing some pictures here I want to make the template bigger (size of the recess for the window) and replace the window rubber with a stock door rubber.
I will then also finish off the cover with a rubber seal (must look for the picture and will post)
Please keep me in the loop if you know of a better way.
