'Military' license plate holder - rear door

I recently bought a licence plate holder coming off a W461 MB 290GD, as used in the Dutch Army.
I think a similar type is used on the PUR models.

Anyway, today I had some spare time and decided to install this part.

A few pics of measuring, drilling, painting (car will be repainted in a year or so), riveting and the final result.

Of course, part has to be painted black later, and also, need to install the licence plate illumination lights. Need to do the wiring for it as well.
For now happy with the result.
Btw, the 'angle' of the rear wiper in off position, is different on those military models. It's on the same angle as the cut-out of this licence plate holder.
I however, have decided to keep it on the horizontal position, as it wipes a larger area of my rear window then

Bram

RE: 'Military' licence plate holder - rear door

I have heard that next year the Dutch government will tax any vehicle with a military number plate mounting an extra 50 euro per year.

Looks good Bram!

Haha, they're crazy enough to do that.

But slowly working towards a little bit of the PUR look, and what I like myself of course (and is a little affordable...). Parts like flares, snorkel are quite expensive still.

RE: 'Military' licence plate holder - rear door

It will be the "PUR-est" of all.

PUR Bram!

Baby G got new front shocks and retrofit with a 463 steering damper. My 280 doesn't need a damper at all, but for some reason this little 230 is susceptible to the "death wobble". Good thing Warren gave me a damper years ago that was laying around the garage along with a new pair of Doetsch 8000 series pre-runner shocks suitable for the front. All playing nicely now.

All the best,

-Dave G.

That is correct, that is not shown on this topic.

I will update that later, I got all the PN's if needed.

RE: 'Military' license plate holder - rear door

Hereby some partnumbers.

The bracket itself is PN A4617400214 and that one is expensive! Better find a used one from Guido or other G parts specialists.

See below for a PN overview of all the additional parts.

License plate lights, light covers, some rubbers under the lights, some screws, and some rubbers for installing between the bracket and the door.

Next weekend I will post some pics of these parts and how they mount on the holder.

RE: 'Military' license plate holder - rear door

Hereby some pics of the installation of the license plate lights with the covers:

Picture 1 and 2:
Use the 3 rubbers strips A4617430405 under the license plate bracket and use 6 Torx screws A000000001146 to mount the bracket through the large holes.

Picture 3, 4 and 5:
Remove the lens cover of the lights (A0028202358), so you can screw the base of the lights with 2 screws each (N007985005149) to the bracket. Be sure to put the rubber (A4618280198) under the light base.

Picture 6 and 7:
Install the light cover (A4618260324 and A4618260424, left and right) over the lights with 5 screws each (N007981003203).

Picture 8 and 9:
Install license plate. I would rivet the license plate in plate, but any type of installation is fine.

Picture 10:
You should reinstall the windshield wiper a bit on the spline so that it lines up with the angle of the bracket.
Now when you flip the wiper away from the window, it scrapes against the bracket.

Next time I will do the wiring.
For leading the wire through the rear door sheet metal, use rubber A1239970181.

RE: 'Military' license plate holder - rear door

I saw this G at a local MB repair shop a few weeks ago. A 460/461 with the upper door mounted license plate holder here in Portland.

The rear wiper arm appears to be missing, maybe it was not on the option list. I didn't stop to look, just snapped the pic as I was driving by.

Re: 'Military' license plate holder - rear door

I made one for my (now sold) project G... managed to download some diagrams and bend one up out of 1.8mm steel (well, two actually, one got sold the other is in my garage). I bought the proper MB end caps (silly expensive for what they are) and a pair of MB number plate lights (which were identical to generic Ring or Hella units at 1/10th the price!) Drilled the holes for the plate lights and welded on M6 nuts on the back, then got the unit powder coated. looked as good as an original MB unit.

RE: 'Military' license plate holder - rear door

The endcaps are indeed somewhat expensive for some plastic caps.
The rest (apart from the bracket itself) is fairly priced.

Today I started doing the wiring.

First I removed the rear door inner panel (picture 1).

I drilled a 17mm hole for grommet A1239970181.
It's better to drill it at the encircled location. I drilled it between the rivet nuts, but that will interfere with that rubber strip of the bracket mounting. Not a big problem, but drilling it a bit to the right will clear everything (picture 2).

Also remove the inner driver side rear corner interior panel, to get to get some acces leading the wire coming from rear door down towards the rear taillight.
In the drive side taillight housing I connected the original wire from the original license plate location with the new wire going to the rear door and up towards the new license plate location.

Here are some pics of some installation details:

I cut the wire from the original license plate lights just after the light (picture 3).
I pulled this wire towards the driver side rear wheelwell and there I mated it with the excisting taillight harness and fed it through the grommet, so that it ends in the taillight housing (remove taiilight) (picture 4).

The 2 core wire I pulled from the 17mm hole in the rear door above the window, down towards the wiper and window heater harness. It is quite a fiddling job to get the wire all the way up there, but when using a wire puller it was doable.
I put it through the rear door grommet and then also through the rear body panel grommet.
To give some extra space for the grommet, I removed the isolation around the 2 core wires at that section (picture 5)
Then I tidied it up using some electrical tape (picture 6)

Inside the car, lead the wire down through the rear door body frame. In the picture you can see the wiper/window heater harness and the black wire coming from the grommet and downwards through the frame section (picture 7).

Lead this wire downwards, so you can pick it up at the taillight housing and pull it out of the frame secion. Here you can also see the fog light harness going up (don't mind the rust, G is awaiting resto work) (picture 8).

In the taiilight housing you can connect this new wire with the old license plate harness. I'm using these crimp bushings and heat shrink (picture 9).

Tidy everything up with some electrical tape and reinstall the taillight (did I say to not mind the rust) (picture 10)

Tiewrap a section of 2 core wire on the back of the license plate holder to make the connection from the left to the right lamp (bracket needs to be powdercoated black later) (picture 11)

I punched a hole in the rubber mounting strip for the bracket to correct my error of drilling that 17mm hole between the rivet nuts (picture 12)

Mount the hole bracket and license plate light back on the rear door, and crimp contact the wires from the right and left light together (picture 13)

Crimp contact the wires on the right lamp to and reinstall the lenses and the covers. All should be working now!
