RE: Fuel in America....A fuel filter change

I don't disagree about gasoline being a commodity, to a point. During a tour involving fuels while in the military I was surprised to learn that while there might be a standard for a given fuel type, it was possible for there to be an "acceptable" variation and that variation was sometimes detectable in engine performance. I learned that the variation can occur at a particular refinery refining a particular source of the crude. It was all very interesting.

Regarding fuel detergents. I wish I could compare the EPA minimum requirement (ever how that is measured) against the European requirement against the Top Tier requirement. It is my understanding (and I plead ignorance in advance) that the EPA minimum detergent would not meet a Top Tier and/or European requirement.

Regarding fuel quality produced in this country compared to say Europe I recall reading about "the BMW Test". I located some literature about it: http://www.swri.org/3pubs/ttoday/summer90/qual.htm An enlightening read. Not sure what the truth is today. It's rather elusive when talking about oil, lube, spark plugs, tires, firearms, ammunition and ...

Re: Fuel in America....A fuel filter change

An update to this thread.

I have used Marvel Mystery Oil added in small amounts to the fuel tank for the past 2 years or so after filling up.
I also use Chevron "Techron" Fuel System Treatment when going on longer drives...usually once a year.

Personally, I do not think Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) when added to the fuel or Chevron Techron Fuel System Treatment are snake oil.

Re: Fuel in America....A fuel filter change

My experience with Marvel Mystery Oil:
When unleaded fuel was implemented in the US (yes I am dating myself) I used Marvel Mystery Oil in my 356 Porsches to improve the fuel and make for healthier valve stems, which lasted longer on the leaded fuel.

This product has been around a long time for good reason.

Agreed...It was used during WW2 for piston-engined aircraft.
Personally, I think it works.

RE: Fuel in America....A fuel filter change

I am no chemist. When I look up MMO's MSDS, I find this (which is about what I seem to find when I look up other fuel additives):

POSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS
COMPONENT CAS NUMBER CONCENTRATION (wt %)
Naphthenic Hydrocarbons 64742-52-5 70 – 80
Mineral Spirits 08052-41-3 20 – 30
Chlorinated Hydrocarbons 00095-50-1 0 – 1

I've always assumed that the majority of the fluid is simply a carrier fluid for "active ingredients", the lower percent chemicals. But maybe I am wrong. Maybe the Naptha and Mineral spirits provide a benefit too.

Thoughts anyone?

Re: Fuel in America....A fuel filter change

I change fuel filters annually on the 500GE (and most of my other vehicles).
The past two fuel filter changes I have poured the contents of the fuel filter into a bowl to observe the condition and it looks exactly like the last picture I posted on 5/8/2015.
Clean and transparent. I am very pleased.

The ONLY thing I did was continue to run Marvel Mystery Oil monthly (half a bottle) in the fuel tank and on extended road trips with 500GE (More than an hour and a half of driving) I add a bottle of Chevron Techron fuel system treatment. Usually when driving to Key West or Tampa.

It seems that the Marvel Mystery Oil did a great job of cleaning up my fuel system on the 500GE.
