Tie Rod Problem

I ordered a new Tie Rod and got the part number off of the EPC.

I received it last week and removed the tie rod on my 500 GE earlier today.

However, there is a problem.

The new tie rod ordered is about 2 inches shorter than it should be!

Any ideas on different tie rod lengths? If I adjust the tie rod end outwards, it will be extended way too far and the length of the rod is obviously too short.

I ordered part number: 463-330-06-03

Again, from the EPC, using the VIN of my 500 GE.

Thanks for any ideas.

Re: Tie Rod Problem

For my 500GE, the epc shows, for widened track, two part numbers. I don't understand the difference.

they also show two different part numbers. One titled. LOMFOERDER and the Second one titled EHRENREICH

For Example the one titled. EHRENREICH shows two part numbers.

A 463 330 04 03 Then it shows in Red with a - sign below the first number.

-A 463 330 06 03.

I wonder if one is for the widened track and one is for the non widened track?

Someone else will have to comment on this.

Sorry to hear this.

Re: Tie Rod Problem

I spoke to the factory in Graz, and was informed that there was an error in the EPC.

The right Part Number is 463 330 03 04 or 463 330 04 03.

I just checked with my dealer where I order parts.

They actually had this tie rod in stock.

We are going to measure it before I pick it up....Part No: 4633300403.

I will report back.

Re: Tie Rod Problem

Alan i think on early 463 its always better confirm at EPC with complete VIN to see if the SAs are there or not. I dont know when those axles become standard , on my G500/2005 they are .

Re: Tie Rod Problem

Came across EPC error where the vehicle had the SA for widen axles but not the "longer tierod" - EPC error. EPC has errors in it .

Re: Tie Rod Problem

The error in the EPC was reported to me by the factory in Graz. I called them to ask what was wrong with the tie rod part number.

Re: Tie Rod Problem

When they digitalized the data on digital EPC they made many mistakes. We coudnt say they didnt did a good job .My cabrio 1991 has the correct data so it depends on the VIN . Your dealer can correct iformation at on line EPC.They have a way to do it.

tks

RE: Tie Rod Problem

When I discovered this problem with my G I noticed that the part number was correctly indicated for a SWB 463 with widened track on the EPC. Seems that the problem in the EPC might be with "early" 463 LWBs. Fernando's experience seems to give credibility to this theory.

Not all 463s came with widened track. In the early 463s this was an option and included the widened axles, steering gear and fender flairs etc.

See example below:

Re: Tie Rod Problem

Wow! I did not know that there was a narrow track W463!

Question: Is there any reason to save an old tie rod? Or should I toss it? They are not able to be rebuilt on both ends to my knowledge.

If only one tie rod end comes off, how did he rebuild it?

RE: Tie Rod Problem

I really don't know, but I know that he put this new things (both) on the end of rod.

Also here in my country, in Europa, we have firm who rebuilt this things on the rod and produce new crank-shafts.

Some pics:

old vs. new

rod, I don't have another picture.

So it's possible to rebuild it.
