SRS Malfunction

Not sure if anyone else has had this problem because I haven't been able to get a search to complete.

Turning into my parking spot I got a srs malfunction warning.

This made me think airbag clock spring. Just a complete guess.

If anyone has experienced this and can post up the fix that would be amazing

RE: SRS Malfunction

If you can read the AIrbag codes, that will tell you for sure.  If that isn't convenient, then I'd agree that the clockspring is a 90% probability.  You'll need at least a Baum tool to clear the SRS light, a simple code reader won't fix that.

Re: SRS Malfunction

Oddly, it seems the fuel gauge also won't register full. Not sure if these two things are related. I just filled up but the fuel gauge sits at around 3/4 which it did before I filled up (who fills up at 3/4!?).

Re: SRS Malfunction

Just to update for futures searches:

I replaced the clock spring which restored function back to the steering buttons/horn.

Then had the srs codes cleared and it seems we're back in business!

Re: SRS Malfunction

My SRS light just lit up also. What is this "clock spring" of which you speak and how do I get to it without blowing myself up with the airbag?

RE: SRS Malfunction

You will see it right after the steering wheel comes off.

The air bag is disarmed about 1 second after the ignition is turned off.  I wouldn't hit it with a hammer or cattle prod.  Other than that they aren't that dangerous.

Re: SRS Malfunction

Thanks. The light magically turned off now, but I expect it will be back.

Get the codes read.  I believe the clock spring is a latching failure (needs to be reset with tool).  If the light goes on/off that might point to the passenger seat occupancy sensor.

Re: SRS Malfunction

you guys have a picture of this clock spring?
Have the SRS light on, thought my first guess would be the passenger seat sensor as I moved the seat just the day before the light appeared, this one would be my second guess.

Re: SRS Malfunction

The clock spring connects the steering wheel controls to the main electric system. Therefore, if the clockspring fails it generally disables other control mounted on the steering wheel. Does everything else work?

Re: SRS Malfunction

I saw you post on another forum...this is the part I purchased and replaced to correct my SRS light. Get the code checked..my symptoms were the light wen on and off when the seat was occupied or I moved it in any direction.

Re: SRS Malfunction

have ordered a knob from the mercedes dealer, when this arrives I'll have the car scanned to see where the error comes from, and clock set without command. Thanks
