RE: De-bling the G --- Side moldings

Underneath the "shiny strip crap" is the black side molding as seen in picture 463.jpg near the top of this thread. It looks nice if it is cleaned up as in that photo which I took at the factory. There are no holes in the 463 waist trim from 1990 onwards. Adhesive tape holds the waist trim to the body, and adhesive tape holds the fancy trim strip in the groove of the waist trim.

Here is a pic of the full set I took off of my G500 before mounting the 461 waist trim.

RE: De-bling the G --- Side moldings

Has anyone found a good plastic restore solution. I'm not bothered by the Bling, I would like to restore the plastic to Like-New condition.
I brought this product and tested on a some portion of this trim and didn't see any major difference from the test.

Re: De-bling the G --- Side moldings

I have used Forever Black on my hood air intake and the side air engine intakes and looks pretty good in terms of getting back close to factory black. It is just a dye.

Thanks. I completed one side after doing some maintenance on my FJ. It was getting dark outside, but this product looks pretty good. I'll try to post a pic tomorrow. It's also rated Good with Consumer Reports...

There is and it's not a dye. Once back home, this weekend, I'll get you the product name. Awesome junk, did it once, a year and a half ago, still looks glossy factory!

Re: De-bling the G --- Side moldings

I was shocked at how poorly the shiny stuff was stuck to the black trim. The rubber cement even started to dissolve the silver paint from the back side of theshiny strip, so i recommend the double sided tape over liquid adhesive for anyone attempting to salvage this incredibly poorly thought out bling. Then again it did last ten years in new mexico and hawaii. Maybe hawaii melted the glue?

Did you put any rubber behind the pur trim to keep water etc out from behind otiswesty?

Again - to the original poster, you will not need any heat to get that shiny strip off. Just pull.

Re: De-bling the G --- Side moldings

The strips are made of solid rubber and the back side against the body has a slight concave surface compared to the flat surface of the newer plastic version. Once the screws are tightened down it seems to be sealed pretty tight from all angles. The screws are abutting a metal strip embedded in the rubber. It is possible that there is an opportunity for moisture ingress there. Placing a plastic washer in between may be a good answer, but as they are out of direct water contact, I will probably pass on that.

Re: De-bling the G --- Side moldings

Sounds like it seals up well with only screws. Do you have a part number for the screw anchors and the 461 trim? I keep thinking it is only a matter of time before the shiny stuff starts coming loose in other places and I would just as soon have a better solution ready.

RE: De-bling the G --- Side moldings

How are the lower side strips (the ones at the bottom of the doors) held in place on a 463? Anyone done a R&R on these?

Re: De-bling the G --- Side moldings

The lower ones have a flap that hinges along the top of the groove, full length. There are a series of screws along its length that attach it to the rocker. The left and right side look identical, but the screw holes are in different places. Mine are a little warped and on the "to be replaced" list. The older 460 solid rubber style are no longer made.

The plastic screw anchors are the same as for either side of the front and rear side marker lights. They are part number A460 994 01 45, available at any dealer for under $1 each. The 461 waist trim is 4 separate pieces, rear quarter panel, rear door, front door, and front quarter panel, left and right are the same. The front quarter panel piece spans the body seam and replaces the small 463 piece in front of the front door as well (look at the picture of the tan colored 461 Pur edition in the 3rd post of this thread for reference). Eurotruck has all of the pieces for sale on their website under the 460 body category. I have part numbers for them somewhere but not readily available.

Re: De-bling the G --- Side moldings

Interesting about spanning the body seam. I like the idea of screws holding the stuff on. I still think it would be funny to put some nice lacquered mahogany strips in there though! Carbon fiber is so silly on a 5000lb car.

I've used Val oil sealer. Although the product makes no mention of use on vinyl, it has turned all my water spotted trim, shinny and new looking. Where all other products lasted a few washings or rain showers, this stuff has lasted for more than a year.

Dampen a cloth with oil, fold a popsicle stick into the cloth and carefully cut against the body paint. Works beautifully on all black trim, even the rubber around the windows but, like all products made for rubber, does not last as long.

Val-Oil does seem to be available anymore. Do you have a link or source?

I found it at my local paint store last year.

Seems all the good ole oil based products are heading for the chopping block. I can send you a few ounces if you would like.

If your trim is really spotted, first wipe it down with a lint free cloth, dampened with lacquer thinner (avoid contact with the paint/finish and do not use the thinner on any hard plastic parts such as the door handles, it may change the color to a white haze!). Just like applying the Val-oil, go slowly, in one direction. This alone will make the trim look real close to new, the oil helps to hold the shine and protects from spotting.

In the future, the oil can be reapplied or removed with the lacquer thinner.

Re: De-bling the G --- Side moldings

My buddies' 1991 300GE, the side moldings are not only faded, but warped as well. I guess that should be expected after 24 years. He is milling an aluminum version for the whole truck in the same profile.

I have had some warping of the plastic rocker pads on my 1999 G500. They are being replaced with new parts as well. The old style solid foam rubber 460 rocker pads are NLA, and the 461 Pur/Professional uses the 463 version of the plastic rocker protection strip.
