Ipod Interface - anyone using a Dension Gateway 500 D2B?

Looks like the correct unit for the '99-'04 G500 is the Dension GWL1DB1.

Anyone using one of these?

Has it been working well? Any issues with it?

Thinking about grabbing one for my '03.

RE: Ipod Interface - anyone using a Dension Gateway 500 D2B?

I was looking at just plugin in an wire with phone plug for the iPod or any MP3 to the aux input on the original unit, never happen though, I think the Dension is way overpriced and the aux will fulfill my needs since I don´t need to be able to control playlists via the steering wheel, So just my 2 cents, - did it on my Touareg, worked just fine. Sorry for not answering your Q

Will be installing It in a 2002 G500... will let you know how it goes if you'd like, unless you've already found an alternative.

RE: Ipod Interface - anyone using a Dension Gateway 500 D2B?

Well, just so happened that the Dension came in last night, and I'm still waiting on the rest of the mechanical repair parts to come in.

So, I had a go at it around 4:00 pm this evening, and was done, within a few hours. That was with me screwing with my dogs, drinking beer and trying to cook something up for the Mrs. Could have done it in 2 hours, and that's me being anal and double-checking, etc.

Basically, I'll give you the short, and just throw in the pics afterward. I don't have the time to do a G-WAG play by play with text... but feel free. My pics are not copyrighted... lol. There's about 6 plugs that go in the stereo, easy to reinstall. 1 plug that goes in the ashtray, easy. And 2 plugs that go in the 'heated seat/hazard' section, cake.

Tools:
1. Needle Nose pliers / wire stripping tool (either will work)
2. Phillips head screwdriver, normal/medium size
3. Beer
4. Maybe a small zip tie for the 3 copper wire (not optical) connection to the unit (it's long, or you can just cut it)
5. T-Taps (this is in the video on installing the Dension, in the A instructional below)... this is KEY, without this I don't know how I would have done it. I saw that Walmart had them but not in stock, so I just called a local Car Stereo install piece and they sold me the T-Taps and the wire connector (it's 2 parts) for $5 (.50 cents each piece... got 5 of each) YOU NEED THREE OF THESE.

A. Watch this YouTube video on installing the 'Dension GWL1DB1' in a GL Mercedes of about the same year. Mine is a 2002 G500.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5u5aNGiMDc

B. Watch my brothah from another mothah in this YouTube video pull apart the G500 dash. Note: He uses a bare screw driver, I used a smaller one with a microfiber towel wrapped around it. Take special note where he actually breaks the wood trim free, it's about 1.5 inches from either side of the bottom. Once you hit that sweet spot, it pops right off. Also note where he instructs you to take the 'wheel lock controls' off to get at the ONE other large screw that holds the wood trim in place. My boy does it one handed, trust me, you can do this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtTI-f3sH50

C. Follow these two videos and the small instruction manual they give, as it has a key diagram on where to put the 'Wake Up' T-Tap. This was the only thing I really had to look at... the rest was cake.

D. Drink a beer and enjoy some iPod digital music. Oh, and I just routed the iPod cable to the left of the footwell, right about where the carpet meets the dash... It seemed to be the only place without cutting, and I hate cutting. Squeezed through just fine.

Oh yeah... In image0692 you'll see a black empty plug. It was just sitting there by itself, not plugged in so I'm wondering what it could go to? There's 2 empty spots near the heated seat controls so I'm thinking it may be an extra on the G55...?

Again, no idea...
