Fuel tank question for bram_r

Hi Bram.

Some time ago, I belive you posted a picture and a partnumber of a compact fuel tank you got hold of from a regular Mercedes car. Wanting to adapt it for diesel or water on one of your projects. I looked at it and thought "well thats cool" and got sidetracked with other things.
Now as I'm thinking about putting a additional fuel tank in my G, I tried searching for it, but could not remember where you posted it. Did you ever get to put it in a G?
Where there challenges with size and placement?

My vehicle is primarily build for overlanding / travel duty. So with additional fuel tank capacity of 40 - 60 liters and my average consumption of 11L / 100 km I'm pretty happy. I know there are Landcruisers out there with 250L fuel tanks, but I like my vehicle to be light and relatively cheap to run.

**Edit**
Well I found it now, tracking backwards thru the EPC it is a 125L unit. Quite a bit larger than I thought. Did you put that one in the G?

RE: Fuel tank question for bram_r

Hi Johnny,

I think you have a good memory, only posted once a vague picture of it.
It was about this tank:

]

]

]

I don't think it will fit that good in my Kasten (other tanks will fit better I think), so I think this tank will be sold somewhere soon. New these aren't as crazy expensive as G tanks

The pn. is listed on the last picture, I think it from a 508d van.

RE: Fuel tank question for bram_r

Yup, I remember looking at the picture, but then I was mistaking it for a ordinary car tank and thinking about 50L.
I guess I will be looking in the direction of the original G 52L additional tank. But it's in the 650-750 euro pricerange and I don't know if it will fit with the old the 461 drivetrain I have.
A4614701201 is the part number on the additional tank on the new 280-300 cdi profesionals. AlanMcR found that during some EPC searching

RE: Fuel tank question for bram_r

Here is the 10 gallon ~ 38 liter tank I had built for mine.  It fits between frame rail and drive shaft.  This particular design requires removal of the center muffler, but it wouldn't be hard to re-design it to retain the muffler.  It could be made significantly bigger too.  This size is tucked in well above the frame rails.  Not a scratch on it yet.  As a side benefit, it provides a shelf to mount a smallish on-board air compressor.

Re: Fuel tank question for bram_r

Reviving this old thread, do you have any pics showing this tank installed on your G?

Also curious to know if any members (Johnny Christensen) have bought and tried the MB aux tank already; PN A4614701201

RE: Fuel tank question for bram_r

I bought one, returned it to the MB dealer since it would not fit my W463, due to the battery box:

I got the measurements from Peter, but never got around to checking against my old style 461. I suspect since the newer ones (463 drivetrain) has a placement of the driveshaft, further to the right, there will be trouble with the fitment of the tank.

I still want a under-floor aux tank. I'm thinking about buying the stainless steel kit for my welder and fabricating my own version.

Wow, nice piece.
Especially considering it's price I'll keep this in mind for my 460

I just got the measurement of this tank. About 35 cm wide, so it only fits G with permanent 4WD, so 463 as well as 461 from 2002. They have a measurement from frame to propshaft of 37 cm. The center muffeler could require some modification or need to be gone. Keep in mind if you have battery box behind the front seat, there will be issues.

The old style part-time 4WD, 460 and 461 up to 2002, has a measurement of 22 to 24 cm, depending of the year of manufacture the propshaft. Old style is slim, from 1991 and onwards, the fat propshaft.

Currently there is a great value package with used tank, fuel sender, diesel pump and some mounting brackets at ebay.de
700 euro takes it.

Hi Johnny,

Some good info here.
What I don't understand is the 22 to 37cm difficerence in frame to propshaft measurement between full time and part time 4WD. The rear driveshaft is still in the middle of the axle right? My 463 knowledge is not that great, but on 460 I know the propshaft to the rear is centered in the frame and rear axle.

RE: Fuel tank question for bram_r

463 has it's rear propshaft pushed out to the right and therefore the diff housing sitting off center. Running a very straight line compared to 460.
If we call 460 a 50 / 50 placement between the frame rails, then 463 would be 30 / 70'ish

I just happen to have my own (old) 461 and a project 463 sitting side by side at my place. Have to say that Mercedes created a much better driveline in the permanent 4wd.
Some of the added complexity and weight it not to my taste. But overall, they did a good job.

**Edit** Added a comparison between the two styles of driveline

That's some good info, perfect. Explains it all

For the 461/463 permanent 4wd owners, a perfect solution when auxiliary tank is needed.
