New exhaust

Hello all,

So pretty much my entire exhaust has rusted out of the bottom of my truck. Things are loose and knocking around. I have band aided as much as I possibly can to this point. But I think its time to replace it all. I know this is an expensive endeavor. I just wanted to get some guidance before I get started looking for parts.

There is a complete used 2002 exhaust on ebay which seems reasonable. Would love to hear some expert opinion.

Thank you

Tom

RE: New exhaust

The 2000 G has the exhaust crossing over at the rear of the engine and then both pipes exiting on the rhs. The 2002 exhaust exits on both sides so it's no good for your G.
The most expensive part of the MB system is the cats (£2000+). A custom system is probably the way, but then you are into unknown noise levels

RE: New exhaust

Noise levels isn't that much of an issue, I have nothing under there right now and it isn't to bad. But 2000+ for that? I knew it would be expensive, but I wasn't thinking that expensive.

Re: New exhaust

I had a shop do some work on mine and their work was beautiful and very reasonably priced. Mandrel bending solutions. Shouldn't be too far from you. They wouldn't have eom though - they would run a whole new customs, setup following the factory route.

Re: New exhaust

I also need a new exhaust for my 300GE and MB quoted me some funny 7.000 euro for the whole system&labour. So I think it is a time to look for some custom stainless system.

RE: New exhaust

The expensive item is the cat convertor section. Item 45 on the attached drawing.

Re: New exhaust

TimeValve, Mike York, supplied my parts, all stainless and a pleasure to work with. Even when I had some issues they wanted to make it right

RE: New exhaust

NaptownG - 3/23/2014 4:51 PM So pretty much my entire exhaust has rusted out of the bottom of my truck.

Tom, Just to be clear, what are you needing to replace?

- Everything after the exhaust manifolds (CATs, exhaust, heat shields)
- everything after the CATs
- exhaust only after the cats
- exhaust only after the cats but crossover pipe not crossover muffler
- heat shields too

I have had nothing but perfect experiences with TIMEVALVE for my 1980 450SEL and my 1986 280GE (I mailed him my exhaust because at the time, he had no patterns). I am hopeful that someone will end up sending in their 2000 G500 exhaust to TIMEVALVE and be the first. I like the idea of a TIMEVALVE setup to include a crossover pipe vice muffler. Something you need to consider is that if there is a specific Mercedes connection hardware to connect into the factory pipes, you may need to have that discussion with them.

So far I am impressed that my now 14 year old OEM exhaust is doing well...but those days are numbered I am sure. There are certainly other options out there related to custom work, some already presented in other threads.

RE: New exhaust

The heat shields are in pretty good shape. Other then that, everything is pretty rusted through. Both Cat's, and exhaust are completely deteriorated. I live about 20 miles from Mandrel Bending Solutions that BlueG had recommended. I might drive up there today and see what they say.

Thank you guys for all the input. I guess my question is, drop the money for OEM parts. Or get it fabricated. Does it make a huge difference or not?

Noise is not an issue for me.

Re: New exhaust

A well fabricated system will be as good as OEM at a fraction of the cost. Also, you can ask to have it all made in stainless to make it even better.

Please keep us posted on this. I don't live far from Annapolis and as mentioned earlier, I too will need a solution eventually. Hopefully, your source will be open to keeping a build sheet available for future business.

RE: New exhaust

I will certainly keep everyone posted. There is a place in Annapolis that does that fabricates exhaust systems. They came highly recommended by a friend. So I am dropping it off there this afternoon. I will post pictures when I get it back.

Re: New exhaust

Naptown G,

Any update here with your exhaust? I'm in similar straights on my '00 G500. Both mufflers are rusted through.

Thanks for any intel!

Wow. Is this what happens after 14 years in the northeastern snow 'n' salt?
