Wolf rear bumpers, modified

Through some lucky deal I got a number of army rear bumper sets.

The one here discussed is as far as I know a Dutch early model Wolf rear bumper, which I thought would fit nice on my 280GE/290GDT G.

Standard, only the left bumper comes with a provision to mount the rear fog light, but as I already have the rear fog light on the left rear body, I though to install some extra work/back up lights instead to give me some more light during backing up and hooking up trailers and such.

Therefore I modified the right rear bumper, using a template I cut a similar hole in the right bumper using the same dimensions and location as on the left rear bumper.
Also, I copied the metal strips to mount the light to.

Luckily, Guido had to of these 'fog' lights with the clear glass laying around, so I have the correct lights to install on both bumper sections.

Some pics:

The set as I got it:

I like the integrated light and the towing eyes:

But not symmetrical, time to modify the right section for my back up/work light idea:
]

Made a simple CAD drawing, printed it, and taped it on the right location on the right bumper section.
Drilled holes on the corners to get the right radius, and with a grinder, cut out the rest of the hole:
]

Pretty good result:
]

Metal strip, mounting bracket. Copied the design from the left bumper section:
]

Front side:

Installed both clear lights, looks good!

Detail mounting strip:

The PN of this light is: A0008206456

Later they will be powdercoated in black, for now construction is ready.

Very nice.

Through some lucky deal I got a number of army rear bumper sets.

Does that mean you have some "other" sets?

Would you be willing to sell a pair and post to the UK? (would look nice on my 460)....

Very cool bumpers Bram.

Are the bumper brackets that are mated up to the towing eyes thicker than the others?

Hi Jim,

See pics below for another militairy bumper set:

These are found on Dutch military 290GD W461's.

See here for one on the bomb squad Kastenwagen 290GD's:
]

And on a standard 290GD (ex-army, repainted):
]

Normally when in service, they put these shackles on the towing eyes, as seen here:
]

For know, these sets are spoken for. I'm trying to get more, will let you know if any come up.
Not too easy to find unfortunately...

Hey Bram, I am looking for a set of these Dutch 461 army bumpers. Do you know of any that are available?

Dutch army rear bumpers

Here's some info on the installation of the dutch army military bumpers as pictured on the posts above:

Basicly it's a matter of removing the old bumpers, and installing the new ones.

The lights that go in these bumpers are (very heavy and sealed) military light with NSN 6220-12-306-3494. I have to see what the MB number is (picture 1 and 2)

These lights come with some plug to put through every single wire (picture 3)
I'm connecting the passenger side light from the drive side light, so that's why the double connection.
(The army has one white light for reverse and one red light for fog light. I'm keeping my 460 body mounted fog light and install two white lights in the bumper for extra back up / work lights).

I've enlarged the hole in the bumper mounting to 13mm to route through the two wires. The military 290GD's also route the wire through the bumper bracket, so did I (picture 4)

When removing and installing the bumper end caps, be prepared to snap or grind some rusted bolts and nuts. See for some hardware PN's to install everything with new stuff (picture 5, 6, 7 and 8)
Apparently, the 460 bumper end caps have their bolt holes in slightly different locations that the 461 bumpers, so I had to drill or enlarge some slotted holes (will clean them up later (picture 9 and 10)

Also put on some 3 1/4 ton shackles on these towing eyes (picture 11)

I installed some extra switches some time ago, so I connected these lights to the middle one. You can of course also connect them to your back up light. I like the option to leave them on when the car is not in reverse (picture 12).

I used the ground connection on the upper part of the LH side rear body position (picture 13)

I need to order a second light, but for now I've got one extra work lights on the back! (picture 14)

gr. Bram

Here's some PN info on the MB lights.

You can also find these lights when searching for the NSN I posted earlier.
