I recently purchased a 2002 G500 and have been reading the various posts on the problems that may occur with the transfer case control module and transfer case actuator motor. Am thinking of replacing both with latest versions to avoid future problems but would hate to spend the money doing so if a prior owner already did. Is there a way to tell if they have been replaced? Carfax report listed inspections, maintenance, and one "wiring repair".

Please go into your My Profile and complete the sections telling us the year and model of your G, as well as where you're located. That info helps to get to know and to help you better. If the service was done by an MB dealer, any dealer should be able to pull it up and tell.

Hi Fred if there are no problems then there are no problems. If you have a blank square in the H/L indicator on the instrument cluster then it is another matter.

Vehicle stuck in neutral and the display still happily says "H"! Tried turning off, waiting and restarting but no luck. Tried moving High Low switch but no luck there either. I should have ordered the TC control module and motor as soon as I got the vehicle.

Well, TC control module and TC motor replacement are in the works. Am also planning to have the idler and tensioner pulleys replaced and fitting a new serpentine belt. Are there other items that should be addressed to try to avoid being stranded? Thank you.

Keep a spare Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) and the proper tools to change it out in your spares. Get the Bosch after market part to save a pretty good amount of ca$h.

If you can get access to a Star Diagnosis system, the module version can be read remotely (I need to double-check this, but I think it is so). Then you can compare to what was in the 2002 originally (I have that info somewhere, or it is in a big thread on here somewhere where we tried to list all the versions). I think a lot of them have been replaced, because the MB shop standard fix for any TC shift problem was replace both motor and module. Plan B is to look at the module, but it is buried under a pile of other modules in the center stack. It is very time-consuming to get to it. Edited by W5YK 5/15/2014 10:54 AM

I'm assuming they are electrically shielded and so on? Looks like the install is a bear but better to be safe than sorry and stuck.
