I drive on some Class 4 roads fairly often (Class 4 being public access but not maintained) in an area without cellphone coverage. Was thinking a skid plate might be wise, inexpensive compared to damage or getting stranded. Any down sides to be aware of? I saw one post by someone worrying about trapping heat but that seemed unlikely.

I would be worried that a lot of dirt, mud, leafs and other dry biological stuff get accumulated on such a plate, creating a fire hazard in itself. If I would design such a plate, I would certainly incorporate some long holes in there to get all that dirt out of there more easily.

I don't have Karls VTS transfer case skid plate(yet). I like the idea of extra protection, however, I think the drawback for me would be more tedious servicing of drive shafts, added weight(minimal), and collection of debris.

Has anyone ever needed a skid plate for the differential? The diff is built very strong and thick. Has there been anyone breaking or cracking one?
