Still, with a Hobart welder and a professional bodywork welder as a friend it is doable. Oh and I do have access to a good body rear end to rob bits off. This is the result of being parked in long grass in a field for a few years This might take a while......

Turns out, if you drive a non-galvanized vehicle through water repeatedly, they rust! These older G wagons need to be soda blasted top & bottom then repainted. There are companies in the UK that dip & galvanized old body shells. Don't know if a similar company exists in the USA. Stu

Every one that gets patched up is another one saved for posterity. A worthy endeavor. Do the Dutch authorities tax you for using that old Hobart? I guess you're ok as long as it's not run by a diesel generator. I have some other friends (do you believe it?) that want to make Mesa Verde part of a camping trip this fall. I haven't been back since we were there some years ago. Will be interesting to take another look around there. Good luck with the latest project. -Dave G.

It is a daunting project and seems to get worse the further I dig! I am just happy that my friend who is helping has restored his own G to a lovely standard. And his was even worse than mine! Plus the old girl deserves it, she has been neglected the last few years since her engine was ripped out and sold for cash to fund the other G project Can you believe it is 5 years ago we went camping at Mesa Verda??? Still the best vacation of my life Must get back to the States soon! But here a few pictures of progress?! Not been sitting still, in the meantime also built the M110 into the chassis. The engine donor was an old 280SE now fitted with G-sump and other bits, auto box connected up and she runs! Wheels turn so fingers crossed on the condition of the auto box. The rear of the vehicle is now almost done, the underneath and all joins I will sandblast on Sunday, something I am NOT looking forward to! Then all will be coated in Dinitrol while we tackle the rest, new sills have been made and are ready to be fitted. As you can see the chassis will need some attention as well, so a huge order went off for new spring and shock absorber mounts, all bushings and added bits and bobs. Thank God for my second job... One low point for me (or high point depending how you look at it) was when I thought I had finally found all the rust, took a seat in the G and had a contented look around, then noticed the ROOF was rusting where the 'anti roll bar' sits and in one of the corners!! Really: the roof?? Not a huge deal in the great scheme of things and remedied in a few hours but still: the roof? Anyway i will now get started on the chassis and start replacing the spring and shock perches with shiny new ones, slowly starting to see light at the end of the tunnel! And to cheer myself up I started up the 280 engine yesterday which sprang to life immediately and burbled and roared contentedly ( no exhaust yet) A few pictures for your viewing pleasure: (IMG_0174.png) (IMG_0185.png) (IMG_0151.png) (IMG_0193.png) (IMG_0190.png) (IMG_0197.png) (IMG_0198.png) (IMG_0202.png) Attachments ---------------- IMG_0174.png (511KB - 0 downloads) IMG_0185.png (583KB - 0 downloads) IMG_0151.png (639KB - 0 downloads) IMG_0193.png (646KB - 0 downloads) IMG_0190.png (624KB - 0 downloads) IMG_0197.png (633KB - 0 downloads) IMG_0198.png (631KB - 0 downloads) IMG_0202.png (562KB - 0 downloads)

I have a question for you. I'm totally ignorant in doing body sheet metal work. I notice near all of what I see there, welding wise, is done with a sort of "stitching" pattern where there's a tack every couple inches. Is that the way body work is done? And then I take it the rest is filled with some kind of sealing putty or something? Or does all that stitching eventually get filled in with weld between the stitches? I have some tiny bits of work to do on the 280 this summer so I thought I'd ask before I muck it up too badly. Thanks, and once again great work! When it's done you'll have to ship it over here for a nice trip around the western US. -Dave G.

The reason we didn't do continues welds is that the sheet metal will warp and would take ages to get right again. Afterwards all the welds were treated and then sealed. Funnily enough leaving for the States in the morning but nowhere near you, Chicago and Atlanta. Maybe next year I will bring a G over,,should,be fun! Richard

Would have been able to fully complete that if a. I would have remembered how the rubber bodymounts were fitted and b. If I could have found them.... In the intervening months the whole chassis has been rebushed, new springmounts fitted on both chassis and front and rear axle. While I was at it did a complete front axle rebuild as well. As well as a full brake rebuild including all new brakelines. Then it was time for our annual offroad trip to france, so the blue G was wheeled in and also got a front axle service and also a rear axle bearings replacement, new handbrake cables and a trip to the authorities to show them i fitted a OM606. They like to know these things. Also found out that my G is becoming obese! 2410kg empty for a swb pickup! The blue G happily trundled to France and back and did some serious offroading there so the maintenance paid off. Now I have time again to spend on this red G, just wish I had labeled nuts and bolts etc instead of just throwing them in a large box (or in the direction of...), lesson n learned Richard EDIT: Photos removed to be resized.
