Homemade Goodies for W460

Hello folks,
The more we drive our G the more we notice things that needs to be added.
With the summer we wanted to stop bugs to ruin our just recored radiator. We had a roll of screen and wanted to test if screen is any good to make one.
Result was amazing.
Only one day driving with a insect screen and result was scary. After seeing that horror I do not think I can remove in the summer. I plan to make a better design with some proper attachment points for cleaning.

ROLLING TINTED FILM
We did not want to tint rear door windows. It is not good for night time, or in a cloudy day for passengers on back seat. We made a rolling curtain that made out of tinting film. its %5. works great. We used regular rolling curtains frame and merged 2 of them and make one. Tinting film is not wrinkled nor sticky after several weeks of use.
We are happy wit the results since it works both under the sun and night time.

TRUNK MESH/CARGO NET
When the rear trunk door is opened, it is not pleasant to drop pillow while you are sleeping inside, Or while you loading the trunk you are worried that something will drop when you open up the door. We looked for solution and considered to buy mesh but attachment points were not making it easy to buy the right size.
Next option was to make one. We got the measurement and bought two different thickness of shock cords to distribute the tension properly.
Tested and works fine. We can remove easily when we load the trunk and attach with one hand. Very strong and functions as we desired.

RE: Homemade Goodies for W460

CARGO LIGHT
Cargo light is upgraded to LED. But we wanted a light that we can be dimmed so we can use when we sleep inside. It should be portable so we can locate it to either side of the vehicle or to the lower section of cargo area if necessary. Magnet mount could be a solution but it would scratch when vehicle is dirty (very often its dirty).
We decided to use a dimmer, LED light (we waterproofed by silicon) and a suction cup. Looks like wiring goes to existing roof light but actually it goes to dimmer which is on right top location by the door and then to auxiliary battery. We also installed another light on lower section of cargo panels but not portable. We left both of them one full day and nothing changed in battery voltage.
Now we can dim or move over 4 feet to either side and does not kill the battery.... Now we have a cargo light.

I drive with tinted windows every day. We have quite a few cars, and they all have tinted windows. If you use high quality tint, and a reasonable tint level (such as 35-50%), it can significantly reduce the amount of UV making it into the interior. This helps your interior last longer and fade less, and it helps keep interior temperatures down so your AC does not have to work as hard. It's very noticeable, especially in a vehicle with lots of glass, like a G. And, good quality tint will not bubble and go purple over time, either. Those are some of the very functional reasons that many cars are sold today with tinted windows from the factory.

Some nice home-made, customized accessories for the way you use your G! love to see people creating solutions to things they can make to better suit themselves.

G,,day mate . some very Good ones there .well done .
I did similar to my 5 rear windows (rear passenger doors as well)
I used the reflective type foil / film that is used in the shop roller blinds ,
nearly impossible to see in , but doesn't change the outward view a lot .
mine are held on with Velcro on the corners .
cheers

Nice mods. simple, cheap and effective.

Over here (UK), if these mods were for Landrovers, then Nakatenenga would make them out of stainless and charge a gazillion pounds for them! LOL

I live in Vancouver BC. We have the weather around 60 F. 16c without sun for last a few days. The number of sunny days in Vancouver is not enough to justify having tinted windows in my consideration. This is the reason why we decided have that solutions. These rolls are very rarely used, not needed obviously. That tells me tint would be overkill for us.
If I were having more sunny days, I would enjoy having tinted windows due to reasons you explained.

RE: Homemade Goodies for W460

SECONDARY REAR DOOR LOCK
We wanted to secure our goods in our trunk. It is a simple wish. I am sure some of us have experienced getting all the gear stolen during the trip since the trunk space attracts bad guys like a magnet. After securing side trunk windows, we added partition barrier. Added rolling curtain to hide things inside. Planned to install rear door security screen as well. But all these things would not be effective if the door is not totally secure.
Door had to be opened only by driver when it is necessary. If someone steels my keys, picks the rear door lock or what ever they do to open my rear door must not work for them.

We decided to make the secondary lock. Since there is no such lock for sale, we had to fabricate it. Driver had to operate this lock without getting out of truck. For operating the lock we used choke conversion kit's hard wire cable. Flexible enough for bending on corners but also rigid for pushing and pulling.
When it is locked keys are useless. Nothing can open this door. So simply you pull and push the cable which is not visible to the eye but accessible to driver from his seat.
It is nice to feeling to know everything is safe in the trunk.

RE: Homemade Goodies for W460

MOUNTING A LAPTOP DOCK
We wanted to improve our navigation choices. Driver is taking the advantage of 3D view of large GPS software of Tablet and Garmin that shows Up-North view.
But passenger was either trying to play with one of them or connect all laptop ports and locate the vehicle and explore the surrounding. It was not practical as you know.
We considered laptop mounts but most were just mounts without replicators. Mounts are designed to install by passenger seat around gear stick and we were asking something will not rattle, take space between driver and passenger, require to connect its ports before using it.
Ports had an easy solution. Purchased a proper replicator. Laptop is designed to work with desktop and vehicle docks so we are able to connect power, laptop mouse and other ports permanently to dock. No power cable is needed for laptop once the port is powered. A Sweet set up.
Then we removed the dash top rubber moulding and slided metal holders between rubber and metal panel holding it. So we can attach the the docking mount to these holders with butterfly bolts.
Docking mount that we made is designed to change its angle to use for both laptop and tablet. It is only for passenger use but since screen can rotate, screen can be shown to driver when its necessary.
No rattle, monitor angle is perfect both for laptop and tablet and it never covers the view of passenger while it is set up as tablet. Laptop can be locked to dock by its key but I don’t see myself leaving it there locked to attract people.
Using a laptop is not for everyone. But we decided to use after seeing the advantages of exploring by Google earth. Our Earth can save up to 30 GB cache so I can use it offline without being worried about deleted offline cache.

RE: Homemade Goodies for W460

Do you have a surface prep routine that you'd recommend for using those suction cups?

I could never get them to stick reliably for more than a couple weeks at a time, no matter what I tried. And I never had anything as heavy as an I-pad hanging from one. I drive a little bit of washboard dirt road every day and I think that's the worst case scenario for suction cups. I've ended up hard mounting the GPS and haven't found a need for a tablet or laptop while in motion....yet.

All the best,

I use a RAM mount for my older gen iPad, and it sticks extremely well to the windscreen on some long term, fairly extreme/dusty/bouncy/washboard-type terrain. The suction cup they use doesn't just rely on how hard you press it to the glass - it has it's own tightening device that firmly secures the cup to the glass. They have a lot of other permanent mounting solutions as well.

Driving distracted, how do you have time to drive?

Hi,
I hope it do not seem that I encourage anyone to drive while distracted by navigation units hanging from windshield. If I were seeing this set up posted in a E class forum, I could also have a few words to say about distraction while driving.
But this is G class section. I intend to drive this vehicle to explore mostly my province which has density of population %1 of NJ but over 40 times larger then NJ. At the same time %95 of province is crown land. That means lots of forest where people are not settled. Multiday trips can be planned without seeing any sign of civilization and picking the wrong forest service road or trail means more than just wasting time but loosing precious fuel.
I rarely pick a place to go where I have been before. I also do not drive with off-road clubs or other drivers who knows the area well. So I often stop and scan the Gps and make the correct turn.
I have 4 back-country map books.(only shows the half of BC) They are known to fail updating road closures and big landslides. Using only map books can be very hard to make decision since you may not see the river or lake just 100 feet away while you are in a dense forest service road. Many times I avoided taking roads, that would take me to places away from my route, by using satellite images.

GPS serves to people well once used consciously. As I said earlier, Laptop is not for everyone.

Hi Dave,
Since I also have problem in winter time, I can suggest you to keep the suction cup and windshield warm before using it. If vehicle's temperature will increase when you drive, warm your suction by heater fan hole. To clean the window is also important but If the suction cup is cold when you attached and later the windshield is warmed up, pressure goes down a lot. and also some suction cups are not really soft and working well no matter what you do.

Obviously Panasonic will be considered as cops laptop in Canada forever lol.. I confused so many drivers after installing by that mount. Hard to be an undercover cops vehicle, but has their laptop inside. lol..Dozens of drivers stared at my dash to figure out what I am trying to do.
What power adapter you are using for yours in vehicle ?

I drive cops cars very often as part of my job and is  fun when at traffic light  you just start touching the screen...

I use my Panasonick randomly in my truck, more often we use my Nexus or wife's  Ipad. As I like to keep the things stupid simple I dont have a dedicated power adapter for the laptop - the only thing I have is a hard wired 500W inverter, it covers everything needed - laptops, chargers, etc.
