1995 G320 Fuel pump relay clicking noise, starts but then shuts off soon after

I was in the fuse panel area today to check status of my flasher relay which works when it wants to.  While I was in the vicinity I decided to pull the relays, check for any corrosion on pins and make sure all had a good tight connection when put back.  After doing this, I tried to start my G and it starts but I hear a clicking noise from the blue fuel pump relay and motor shuts off within 5-10 seconds after startup.  Could this just be coincidence that I pulled this relay and it just happened to go bad ?  I did notice when I pulled the relays that I had left the ignition in the on position.

All fuses have been checked and in order.

I cycled the IR locking system (old 95 version)  locking and unlocking with same starting result and clicking noise.

Any thoughts ?  Maybe it just took a crap when I pulled it out with the ignition on ?

Mike

RE: 1995 G320 Fuel pump relay clicking noise, starts but then shuts off soon after

Since you pulled them with the ignition on, I'd check the fuses first. Next, I would pull the fuel pump relay, open the case and check the solder connections at the relay pins. The engine wasn't running when you pulled the relay, so it should not have had any effect.

I can't tell from your post if the door lock relay is functioning or not now. A clicking sound is normal when it is activated.

FIXED

I tested relay and it appeared to be good so I had to rethink about all that goes on in relation to the relay....Then I just thought maybe i should disconnect all power and "reset" the ECM or whatever controls/sends signals to the fuel pump.  I disconnected all battery power for 30 minutes, plugged back relay and all is good.

RE: 1995 G320 relay locations

I am wondering if there is a relay for the radio in my 1995 G320. The radio has not worked and the fellow that helped me buy the truck swapped it out and the new radio he installed was inop as well. The fuse is good. I have yet to pull the unit as I can't find my Blaupunkt pullers right now. I thought it may be possible that there is a faulty relay and have looked in the owners manual, but there is no mention of the relays above the fuse box.

If any one here has information of the layout of the relays for these vehicles, I would appreciate it. I have been daily driving the little gem since the blue g500 is on winter studded tires and could really use some music.

Here is a pic of the relay rack.

Re: 1995 G320 Fuel pump relay clicking noise, starts but then shuts off soon after

From what I can see in the wiring diagram, the radio along with the cigar lighter is Fuse 15 (F15) which is 20amp fuse. It should be a red wire with white stripe and looks like goes through convenience switching relay K24. See attached photo....#11

Re: 1995 G320 Fuel pump relay clicking noise, starts but then shuts off soon after

Not aware of a relay for the radio. Should be a direct power (both switched and unswitched) and ground, plus other connections/inputs. If the radio has switched and unswitched power leads at the back of the radio, then the radio should work.

Looks like I need to brush up on my late night wiring diagram skills. Thanks.

RE: 1995 G320 radio/relays

My laminated paper sheet and the electronic owners manual you sent me both say fuse 13 which checks out fine. My 1995 G320 relay arrangement is a little different as my Kiekert relay is up behind the glovebox. Maybe mine is an early 1995 version

I will have to pull the radio and test the Circuit 15, 30 and ground directly

RE: 1995 G320 Radio/Convenience relay

Looking at the wiring diagram, it looks like the power is fed through the convenience relay (K24) you have an arrow pointing at above via circuit number 409 and 413. I am thinking this relay is the culprit as the installed radio was known good and the prior unit had the same similar issue.
Thanks for the data sheet

RE: 1995 G320 Convenience relay

So I did a little searching around, and found this peachy post that made me think I was headed in the right direction.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/315063-convenience-re...

Once I got home, I dropped the fuse panel again and looked for the suspect relay - 0015427819
To my horror, it was not there

I did check the two 10 amp fuses in the overload protection relay there and they were okay.

RE: 1995 G320 Convenience relay

Knowing that my Kiekert relay was up behind the glove box and not where the manual said it would be, I looked there as well.
There was a opaque plastic relay right next to the auxiliary fan relay that looked a lot like what I was on the hunt for.

I pulled it, it was warm....

Part number 001 542 78 19, online wholesale cost $47.25
https://www.oediscountparts.com/parts/index.cfm?make=Mercedes-Benz&y...

I'm thinking this is a "cheap" fix compared to having CarToys work on the radio and run new wiring.

Re: 1995 G320 Fuel pump relay clicking noise, starts but then shuts off soon after

Interesting...you can see my Kiekert relay located as where manual indicates in photo above and obviously the K24 placement as well.

I would have thought your "fresh European G" layout would have matched more to the manual than my "Europa/Federalized" model. My G320 was build date of 10/13/1994.

Definitely post the results of the relay swap.

Re: 1995 G320 Fuel pump relay clicking noise, starts but then shuts off soon after

That relay is exceedingly common in W124 models. Just get a few used relays from cars in the wrecking yards. They don't fail that often, but it's handy to have them on hand as spares. In my opinion it's much preferable to use used factory relays (higher quality) than aftermarket units.

One of the best deals going on factory parts, if you want to go that route, is MB of Naperville, IL. They have a special code for members of my web site that provides free shipping, in addition to their already generous discount on the parts cost.

http://www.mboemparts.com
DISCOUNT CODE at checkout: 500EPROMO

Parts generally arrive within 4-5 business days, often shipped directly from MB's parts warehouses directly to your door via FedEx.

http://www.mboemparts.com has this relay for $46.42 with free shipping, per above. If you can wait until the 27th of March, I'm happy to send you one from my stash of at least 10 of them, gratis.

otiswesty - 3/14/2017 10:35 AM Thanks Gerry, I'll take you up on that You have PM
The P3 forum software doesn't allow me to display any private messages  - it just defaults to the PM inbox list, but I cannot open individual messages to actually read them.  I have tried this with multiple browsers and it still does not allow me to open messages.

if you can resend your message to my e-mail address, gerry@vanzandt.us I will take care of it when I get back to Houston on the 27th March.

I have not been able to diagnose why the forum will no longer allow me to open individual private messages, but this has been going on for at least a year now.   I can create messages, and reply to individual messages (but I can't see what is said in them, so it's no use replying), but I cannot open and display individual received, and "sent" messages I've sent in the past.

Cheers,
Gerry

Re: 1995 G320 Fuel pump relay clicking noise, starts but then shuts off soon after

One other thing I wanted to bring up -- another avenue of investigation -- a common occurrence with the M119 W124 models.

This is when the fuel pump relay clicks, it is a very strong indicator that the ECU is bad and needs replacing. We have numerous threads on this on my forum. You can find a couple of them at these links:
