Intermediate drive shaft CV joints?

My G is just about to turn 70k miles and am trying to do preventive maintenance. Have replaced a number of items, such as the crankshaft position sensor, simply based on age and others have needed work. I read with interest one of the post below which included the comment;

"You're at good number of miles at which to clean out and re-grease your intermediate drive shaft CV joints, or at the very least check the boots for cracks and go from there."

Looked at the boots this morning, they are intact but when I touch them they are not what I would call flexible. Quite stiff, more like a hard plastic than what I would expect for rubber. I would assume that means time for new ones or is that what they normally feel like?

Thank you.

Re: Intermediate drive shaft CV joints?

At 70K, I would recommend you just change them, along with the CV Grease.

Re: Intermediate drive shaft CV joints?

I don't think this applies since it's a CV rather than a U-joint.

RE: Intermediate drive shaft CV joints?

the boots will not likely show any sign of aging at 70,000 miles - it's the grease that loses all it's properties.
Replace the grease very soon. If you find any sign of wear after cleaning the units, you must install new CV joints.
I have tried to re-grease worn CV's - it does not work.

rather than replacing just the CV joints I found it much more economic to simply stick in an entire new shaft.
around $650 if you shop around

Now Harald tell me something: I had a very little vibration, most likely coming from the center propshaft. Pull it out, inspected thoroughly; both rubber boots and clamps intact, rubber soft and not cracked; however the grease inside was pretty hard. Marked, dissembled, cleaned and inspected carefully - no signs of wear, zero, nada. re-greased, assembled, installed back. Still slight vibration, noticeable less but still. What this could be.

Sorry for the of topic - its not gonna happen again

RE: Intermediate drive shaft CV joints?

Titus,

chasing vibrations is difficult. However, since you worked on the shaft and now the vibrations are less, it would indicate that the cause is the center shaft. How many miles?

Re: Intermediate drive shaft CV joints?

It could be worn transfer case mounts. Check the left hand one (viewed from the rear), which suffers the most movement.

100K now. Now, something else comes in my mind. A old trick we used to use back in the third world - when you have a worn CV joints on a FWD car axle shafts sometimes we use to change the CV joints -left goes to right and  the right goes to the left, this way they work on a non worn surface. Did it couple of times and it works. So what will gonna happen if I mount my center shaft the reverse direction. Not saying that I will do it, just food for thoughts.

Clever, but in this case, the direction of twist is the same if you switch ends.  So, no help at all.

Re: Intermediate drive shaft CV joints?

G'day all,

Has anyone got the PN for the boots, mine have seen better days & are starting to split.

It is time for new boots & a re-grease.

Eurotruck has both the MB kit (A.463.410.00.28) and the GKN aftermarket kit at a lower price. See here and scroll down a bit.

Re: Intermediate drive shaft CV joints?

Harald, where did you get the new shaft for $650? Is this a typo? The cheapest I can find it is $820.

Harald's post is from 14 months ago. Your $820 price is pretty darned good. MBUSA MSRP for that shaft is US$1,490.00, discounted from my parts supplier to US$1,117.50. So, I would say to you, where did you find it for $820.00?

Re: Intermediate drive shaft CV joints?

Couch Off Road engineering out of Colorado has it for $800 plus shipping. This is for a GKN shaft P/N 463 410 07 02 that fits 90's and early 00's G's. Not mercedes.

So are these GKN parts or another after-market part?
