Posts: 788 | RE: DHS and Vehicle Seizures having done the rover thing, dont feel bad for these owners, they knew they had a VIN swapped rig. precious few are impulse buys. they did the research, they know what a 25yo defender that lived on a wet island would look like. they know the cow is swapped, the frame is swapped, the engine is swapped, the interior is new, the grill is new the transmission is new... basically, they know what they did, they know what was done, and they thought plausible deniability would save them. the thing about many VIN swapped rigs, is they are made with stolen parts before they are shipped. not all of them but many. the tactics may seem over the top, and if i had one of the rigs that LR didnt supply good information on id be pissed, but it prevents fights. REPO man shows up at my house to take a clearly '83 110 thats paid for, but the information is showing vin swapped, and i have no idea why hes hooking at at 3am, and i could be violent or putting a hole in him. 12 cops? i'm watchin' and wonderin' wtf, but no one is getting hurt. theres no grand conspiracy to take away everyones rights. just upper middle class white men on a 4x4 site =ing paranoia.

But I doubt it. Edited by MudMonkey 9/2/2014 7:29 PM

The lawyer representing the injured parties apparently did a phenomenal job. I'm sure more news on the mediated settlement will come out in the following days

I believe that the US Customs or Homeland security folks pulled it to scope the inside of the frame looking for a VIN swap. For a 21 year old car it is very clean and almost new condition. I would like to replace this plug before the rainy season starts here, but cannot find it in EPC. Any one know the part number?

Never would have thought of that reason. I didn't find the correct part number either, but eventually I just jammed in a plug that sort-of fit. My main concern was keeping dirt from getting in there and holding moisture.

Otherwise a caplug of the right diameter should work. I have some spare 34mm ones, if that's the correct size.

More likely the Gov folks were looking for dope! According to the EPC, there are seven of these expansion plugs used in the frame. The part number is A 000 997 32 20 and the plug is supposedly for a 20mm hole. Please measure yours to make sure we are barking up the same tree. Googling this part number should turn up a photo as well. Hope this helps guys,
