24V to 12V

I've searched for threads addressing 24V Gs. With the Wolf renovations I'm sure I've just missed them.

I'm interested to know:
  • Is a military G wired with lighter gauge wire or is it a 12V system just running a 24V starter and other components?
  • If it is not the same wiring, is there any reason to bother converting to 12V other than for stereo and other civilian stuff which can be addressed.
  • What else am I neglecting to think of when considering a 24V truck?
Thanks in advance!

RE: 24V to 12V

To my understanding, there are both 12 volt and 24 volt circuits on the truck.

So in theory, wires need to be reconfigured, something in the starter needs to be switched and what else? Do gauges have to be switched?

RE: 24V to 12V

That generally depends on the year of the truck and what the delivery specs were at the time of manufacture. My ex-Bundeswehr Wolf was 24V only when I received it.

Here ya go

The BIG problem with a stock 24v truck is getting spare parts, they are more expensive and much less readily available. It would be way worse with a gasser like a 24v 230GE, add entire ignition system conversion...
The Wolf 24v diesel would not dissuade me as it is a completely mechanical engine

Only W461s with full time 4x4 (2002+) have both the circuits (I think the 24v circuit is very simplyfied, it is there mainly for being able to jump start the vehicle from a 24v truck). The older military Gs have only 24v electrics.

The link is great! Doesn't sound like high skill job, though it is complex! Thank you for finding it ... If I'm understanding the instructions correctly, it is only resistors, relays and components that need replaced, not the wires themselves ...

Re: 24V to 12V

Depending what model you are trying convert? Pre CDI diesel is not a problem.

I looked at 270CDI and realized the instrument cluster is 24V.
The Swiss G (230GE 24V) has too many relays and the ECU to deal with.
These may be 12V but one would want to spend a lot of time to figure out
if there is 12V power supply separately to run all of these relays and the instrument cluster
in the case for the 270 CDI. Or they are 24V? Are the fuel injectors 24V?
I dont know ... but as you can see, it is hairy.

No need to replace the wiring loom.

Once nice thing on the military version, no A/C or accessories to complicate the conversion.

24V system parts are expensive. ie: 230GE ECU = €€€€€€
