Tow bar build

Dear all,

It sure is a great feature that most of the G front bumpers are come with a tow pin.

This makes it perfect to use a tow bar instead of a towing cable. A tow bar is safer and more comfortable when towing.

I recently had some lasercutting work designed and had some extra 15mm thick pulling eyes cut for welding onto a tow bar.
This tow bar I made out of an old traler tow bar.

I cut a 15mm gap on the end of the tow bar and welded in my towing eye:

Tow bar complete; on the left the hitch ball coupling, on the right the towing eye for attaching to the tow pin bumper:
]

The hitch ball coupling is attached with two M12 bolts.
I had the idea for situations where you got two G's nose to nose, that it was a good idea to convert the tow bar to a towing eye - towing eye configuration.
Therefor I had another towing eye cut, with two holes to be bolted on the location of the hitch ball coupling (coupling is then removed of course.
When not in use, the towing eye gets mounted 180 degrees back, so it's just there out of the way on the tow bar, waiting for the moment when it's needed

]

=============================================================================

A design I made earlier is a split bar design.Having three 'halves' of tow bar.
Again, two halves have the towing eye, on halve has got the hitch ball coupling on it.
Depending on the situation, connect the two sections you need and pull all you want.
Used this one aleady a few times and works perfect.

RE: Tow bar build

Nice, having no tow pin I used to use a heavy duty steel tube with a shackle welded on to in each end to fit into the towing tiedown points

Won't that give you a whole lot of play in the connection between tiedown and shackle when pulling/braking?

Anyway, some extra pics of my other end of the tow bar.
As said, the towing eye can be put in a 'stored' position when not in use (hitch ball coupling is used).
When facing G's nose to nose, this towing eye can be switched over to be put in the front bumper with towing pin. Hitch ball coupling is the removed.

Seems to work just fine, with an old tralier tow bar and two lasercut towing eyes, I'm good to go
Only need to finish it properly, sandblasing and powdercoating or something...

Yes, the pin in the shackle will move some in the tiedown point when braking/pulling - but still way better than a rope IMO
