Preparing 300GD for paint

The time has come to get my Kastenwagen repainted.
Some other jobs have finished and it will save a whole lot of space in my barn to get all those parts back on the G again

So, time to get the sanders and prepare the body for a repaint and some bondo here and there.

First, this 1982 300GD lwb originally is Colorado Beige (MB color 1470).
Then apparently this G was repainted blue.
After the blue a serious layer of surfacer is applied, then a coat of white is painted on.
All and all a decent layer of paint. I wasn't too happy with the idea of painting another color over this white, so decided to sand back some layers to get around the beige and original primer layer.

I'm definately no expert on this, so any advice is more than welcome!

Second, I have no plans to do the paint prepping and the painting myself.
I will do all the preparation most myself and the rest I have to discuss with the painter (also to save some money)

My sanding machines are a Festool RAS 115 (rotating sander) and a Festool RO 90 (excentric/rotating / can convert to delta sanding head).

Here I just got started, different colors appear. I'm starting with grid 80 and 120 to do the rough work and sanding down to the layer I approximately wanna be:
]

Excellent tools with perfect dust collections! The Rotex is for the rough work, can be diifficult to control. The RO 90 got some kind of free floating orbital setting which makes it easier to handle, but is less aggressive then:
]

I think this is the color it's going to be, SaharaGelb, as found on the W115/W123 series. Nice classis flat yellow, I think it will come out nice on the Kasten.

RE: Preparing 300GD for paint

Slowly getting there, removing the old layers of paint and getting me psychedelic paintjob now

]

All these edges and ridges are a pain to work on.
The real loose and bad paint I now remove with a wire brush on a grinder, takes too long to sand everything down.
After that is sanding till it's smooth:

Every weekend try to make a few hours on this, in a few weeks I'll take it to the painter

RE: Preparing 300GD for paint

Spent about a complete day on the hood.

Labour intensive stuff all that sanding, but we're getting there.
It's when you're sanding you realise how many lines and ridges there are on a car

This is after grit 120, already pretty smooth working with those Festool sanders, need to step up to 240, then leave it to the painter....

Next weekend starting with the fenders and rear doors...

Re: Preparing 300GD for paint

I almost said that I will race you but I think that with my repuatation this is a bad idea.

I spent the weekend sanding my bonnet also. In the next 6 months the fenders and doors....

What are you planning as a primer coat?

My initial thoughts would be something epoxy based.

I'm planning to visit two paint shops next week to gain advise in the options and the preparation that comes with every option.

I like to do the sanding my self for saving some money and to be sure no (potential rust) spot is missed, but after that I leave it up to the experience of the painter.

I keep reading your topic as well

Agreed.  A few coats of clear-coat and you're good to go, with a paint job that no one can match!

Re: Preparing 300GD for paint

I bought the Jotun epoxy for the chassis today, with black toner.

I will use the same stuff, but without colour, on the body, and overcoat the colour onto that. I also intend to do as much as possible myself, and to let a paint shop do the final layers.So I will watch you closely as "voorganger".

RE: Preparing 300GD for paint

Hood done upper and bottom side:

]

]

'smooth as a baby's behind 'haha

Now continue on the fenders.

I bought two ex-military front fenders.
Normally, all the used fenders here are pretty rusty, especially around headlight area and on the rear corner. These are rustfree with just a few small dents.
So time for sanding again, pics after grit 120.

]

]

]

And today started on the rear left door. Cut out the rear window and removed all locking hardware
Amazing the amount of rigdes and edges. Lots of work, can't wait to start rebuilding again

]

I'm having some extra days off in the next few weeks, hoping to get a lot of work done then.

gr. Bram
