1993 300GE (m103) engine swap to V6 (m112 320)

So, this has been developing in my mind..
I would like change my m103 engine to a m112 v6 3.2litre engine.
Why? mostly for wanting a V6, and secondly just for hell of it and thirdly because I have one V6 engine to spare.
I want to stick to petrol engines, because of the taxing of diesel in my country is quite high...

The thing is I don´t know if it is even possible... What about the transmission? I have a 4-speed automatic transmission. Is it possible to mount a m112 to that one or would I need a new transmission box? And if, it must be the 5-speed auto from a G-wagon?

And what else would I have to change? I have access to the m112 motor with all the bits and pieces.

I know this would require quite a lot of work, but I am up for it. I have a nice car now, but the engine would need overhaul, oil is leaking from quite a few places...

So please, give me your input on this maybe a crazy idea!!

Oh, and one more thing. Lets assume I could do this swap, comparing the m103 and m112, would I expect lowering or highering fuel consumption?

I apologize for the misspelling and possibly incorrect terms, but hope you get the idea.

Thanks for your thoughts on this one!
And if this topic is covered somewhere already, please show me the way, tried searching...

You need to change the transmission - generally the transmissions for V engines and straight engines use different bell housing. If you have a complete donor vehicle it will be easier. And this is just the beginning....exhaust, plumbing, driveline modifications, and wiring is what is next.

RE: 1993 300GE (m103) engine swap to V6 (m112 320)

I would rebuild the M103 into a 3.6L I do not understand why you would prefer a V6 to the inline 6???

The problem you are going to run into is the electronic control systems used to operate the M112, the older chassis doesn't really support those systems. I am fairly certain that you need to mate it with the newer 5 speed auto, and the engine and trans need all of their electronics working and talking to each other. The mechanical fitting of newer components isn't the difficult part of the swap, it is getting the electronics to allow it to run properly in its new home.

Fuel economy with the G would likely remain poor. Aerodynamics, gearing, and sheer wieght means that the G will never deliver good fuel economy, certainly not enough to justify and engine swap for economy alone.

I think the M103 is s spectacular engine. Fitting the deisel engines crankshaft and making a stroker from the 3.0L to 3.6L is a great way to perk up the M103. AMG, Brabus and Renntech all at one time did this conversion and think power numbers were around 250 hp. I suspect you could do this rebuild for less than the cost of the swap with better results. Good Luck

Re: 1993 300GE (m103) engine swap to V6 (m112 320)

Thank you all! I thought I had filled my Location, now it seems to be there.
This is exactly what I was looking for, opinions on this.
There is something about V-engines that excites me, can´t say really what.. maybe the sound has something to do with it.
On the other hand, rebuilding the m103 sounds also fascinating, and I think that is the way I may have to go.. I feel the m103 a little too "lazy", it is suppose to have 170 hp, but I think it might have lost a few over the years. Getting those lost horses back would also be great, and even getting a few more to the horde... I feel the torque is in a strange rpm area, kinda high, am i right?
I might even have a transmission also, but it is from an e-series mb...

RE: 1993 300GE (m103) engine swap to V6 (m112 320)

The M103 probably isn't as soft as you might think, the automatic starts in second gear unless you either manually select first or use heavy throttle from the start. They feel very lethargic driven sanely. My 300Ge was a five speed manual and that car had just barely enough to keep with modern traffic flow.

Too each his own on exhaust note but there is nothing finer than a straight six wail in my book, V6s rarely sound or feel good to me.

Either a rebuild on the M103 or find an M104 210-220 hp stock, or maybe a 3.6 AMG from a wrecker, those were 275hp and would be an easy swap by comparison with doing an M112. If you stay with the stock 4 spd auto, look into first gear start kits, they used to exist, and would make a huge difference in drivability all by itself.
