RE: G63 AMG wreck

I think any AMG g wagen or even any g driven close or over 100 mph on pavement is extremely dangerous by default of suspension design

I think the G is a great do it all vehicle and all g wagens should be limited to never exceed 90 mph no matter which model they are

I have traveled Europe with fast cars and even done the same with a ml 430 at 110 safely but I would never do so with my G and stock suspension and tires,I really know why it would be a death trap to the inexperienced thinking is safe to go to the limited 130 on a amg

It also appears that they cut off the roof in order to get the people out.

Re: G63 AMG wreck

I've been "100ish" in my G500 on highways a number of times her on the California highways, and felt perfectly safe.

The concern for me (besides tickets and fuel consumption) at higher speeds is the "brakes" which I have always felt are under-designed for this truck.

Obviously G's weigh a bunch, and any brake system will be challenged to drag it down from speed. I have had three different brake pad compounds (Stock, Porterfield, and Akebono) and other than "dust" I have never seen any great improvement in "panic" type stopping.

But on open stretches of I-5 I've had cruise control set @ 95 feeling very stable, and being passed by others at well over 100 on numerous occasions. That's when the highway is wide open with no concerns about needing to make a quick stop or lane change...

... felt perfectly safe.

Unfortunately, a feeling is not a factual experience in reality.

As seen in the photo examples, the boxy design of the upper half does not lend itself to doing well in at all in certain crash situations.

In a high speed roll over I'd rather be in modern versions of: Volvo large body (V70, XC&),XC90), Porsche Cayenne ("egg" shape does well), Audi Q7, ML, Range Rover (recent couple generations amazingly well designed for structural aspects). These designs will distribute the crash energies around and away rather than relying on brute strength until complete failure.

RE: G63 AMG wreck

I think the G is quite good in structure protecting passengers.

I also think the shape is quite stable in high speeds even though not efficient with lots of drag

Where I think the risk is in the fact that the suspension layout with panhard rods both front and rear and trailing arms with bushings that deteriorate in very few miles creates a combo that is dangerous because of very loose steering control

I can imagine a normal young driver getting a used amg with 50 k on it and test at 130 on an open empty straight road......suddenly he hits a dip on the highway while at the same time he has to swerve or change direction ever so slightly while the suspension is extending or compressing going through the dip and he looses the road at 120 mph... He will not have a good day and I bet he wil loose the road even more so if at the same time hits his brakes hard trying to slow down fast

An amg at those speeds will change lanes or more on its own with out turning the steering at all under the scenario described above.....just by the steering changes that can be created on their own with that type of design

Another way to understand that is if you took a normal car with enough engine to go that fast and induced a quarter turn of steering lock suddenly at that kind of speed......you could get in trouble even if the car was capable of handling at those speeds and the G definitely is not

That kind of lacking steering lock control has no place with any car capable of that speed .

MB has been very brave with these Gs being driven by most on pavement only....

Re: G63 AMG wreck

We drove our rental G500 up to 235 KPH on the Autobahn in 2009. Felt stable but tons of wind noise. Wife starts crying at 200.

Specifically in roll over or hitting roof structure the modern designs are far safer.

Not sure this counts as 'wrecked,' but I don't see anywhere in the EPC where you get the interior accessory...

Re: G63 AMG wreck

That's sad!
Embarrassing to say the least..
I see the passenger door is either bent, or simply open and being a Hundai, not tall enough to reach the battery bay.
Any idea what caused this.

Re: G63 AMG wreck

Not much left to pick over on those wrecks ... I don't know why he even has them around. He did tell me that he generally does not buy G-wagens, but his total of four is up from the two very old ones that he had a couple of years ago.
