It was making chirping sounds every now and then before it failed completely. I have the replacement pulley from g-wagenaccessories but how do I remove the tensioner? The post in the DIY section talks about removing the radiator first. Is there an easier way?

I did not remove the radiator (I don't know anyone who has had to remove the radiator just for this work) when I performed my first one and I am getting ready to do my second one using Karl's replacement part. This time, as with last time, I only plan to remove the viscous clutch and fan assembly and the radiator shroud. I am replacing both the idler and tensioner pulleys with Karl's parts. Have you started the effort or just doing the planning? Edited by J.R. 9/29/2014 7:15 AM

I was hoping the chirping noise under the hood would be the idler pulley, since most tensioner pulleys seem to be metal. But I looked yesterday and there is melted plastic all over the tensioner pulley. The instructions that came with the replacement pulleys don't really explain how to go about removing the tensioner.

I did it on my 2002 without pulling the radiator. Mostly by Brail, but not really that difficult

The ball bearing seized completely so there wasn't much left of the plastic part of the pulley. I was able to replace the pulley without removing the fan shroud or the upper radiator hose. It was mostly just a matter of having various lengths of 10mm sockets and a suitable extension for the wrench. Is it not possible to remove the pulley while leaving the tensioner in place? I realized that after I put the new pulley on the tensioner, there was no way to get it back into place without removing the fan shroud. So I ended up taking the pulley off, installing the tensioner itself and then attaching the pulley to it. I would never be able to fit my hands with the fan installed and would be worried about damaging the radiator if a wrench broke free. A simple investment in a fan clutch tool set or just a 36mm wrench makes the job extremely easy. Most of the time if you just put a 36mm wrench on the fan nut and hit it lightly with a mallet it will loosen without the use a holder. I found a fan clutch wrench (36mm) for $17 on ebay and holder for about the same. Removing the fan and shroud (held on by clips) only takes an extra 2 minutes and gives you all the room in the world without having to remove any hoses or open your cooling system. It also makes removing and replacing the serpentine belt much easier. Edited by leomd 10/16/2014 12:31 PM (fanclutch.JPG) Attachments ---------------- fanclutch.JPG (23KB - 2 downloads)

Doesn't removing the upper rad hose make things really messy? I would imagine antifreeze gets everywhere. Just out of curiosity I took a look at WIS - they detail removing fan+shroud but then again thats not saying much as WIS is notorious for leading you on a goose chase L Attachments ---------------- belt tensioner.pdf (299KB - 3 downloads)

I've been using the WIS for several years now, and have not found that to be the case.

I found this to be the case with many of the service items on my E55 - hopefully its a different on the G. Interesting about top rad hose - perhaps I will give it a try next time I need to service the idler.
