shift door knob removal ?

Hey guys ! Ive been looking everywhere for a shifter knob removal instruction for my g500 2002 but nothing for this particular model. Can anyone confirm what part to force so it goes off. I went really hard trying to simply unscrew it but nothing will do and im scared to litterally break the rod.

Anyone ? Thx

Hi Loowee, welcome to our forum. Please go into your My Profile and complete the sections to tell us the year and model of your G, as well as where you're located. That info helps us to know and to help you better.

RE: shift door knob removal ?

I will do that today for sure. Thx

Little correction. Im not sure how that happenned but the word door does not belong in the title. I simply want to remove the shifter knob for a interior wrap.

Ouff. Thats a 7hr drive. I live in Quebec, north, rouyn-noranda.

I was expecting a simple "unscrew bottom cone counterclockwise and you'll get a tightening screw" like most models. :/

Is it really complicated ? Cause im actually stuck on finishing up a carbon fiber wrap on the middle console because of that.

Right on !

Its redirected to my cellphone automatically

Truck is going to the body shop in a week so I have to get this done before. Any quick instructions on this one in the meantime ?
I understand its not that simple, does it require work on the tranny ? If so, I might as well try to do the wrapping job with the knob in place. Gonna be painfull but probably less than a mechanic job.

Thx guys !

RE: shift door knob removal ?

The shift knob has a little plastic collar at the bottom that has to be unlocked by 1/4 or 1/2 turn to take the knob off. On both my 02 and 03 it was on very tightly..had to use some large pliers and wrapped the plastic collar with rubber from a bike inner tube so it wouldnt mark or scratch the plastic.

I also attached a .pdf with a graphic that shows the procedure - .pdf credit to AlanMcR who helped me out on this one.

Good luck!

Re: shift door knob removal ?

Thx a lot Leomd, thats what I was thinking !
This forum really is a priceless ressource for my project.

Warren, my family name is Limoges. My dad ( Jean Limoges - long time Mercedes owner and the one who forwarded me this passion ) tells me he knows exactly who I was talking about.

We had a discussion this morning and he tells me, there is a Warren that had a beautiful G-class around here back then. Its a small world !

Re: shift door knob removal ?

I had my shifter knob covered in leather. Taking it off was quite easy but now it keeps swiveling after installation. Amy suggestion?

Re: shift door knob removal ?

That could work … It's pretty now and hopefully won't have to come off for a very long time:
