Re: Need Lower Radiator Hose for 500GE

That would make sense. If it is for the PUR model, and thus, reasonably current, they want proof that the vehicle is in a different market region prior to the order being placed. I am glad you were able to get it through Guido.
Does it have the "hood vents" also? Very nice.

No hood vents or bumps. It is as designed for the 2009 model. There is a pic in the middle of this thread:

Re: Need Lower Radiator Hose for 500GE

Otiswesty: Very cool.

22-November Update

1) Removed leaking lower radiator hose

Notes: Transmission oil cooler line appeared wet on passenger's side. Noted a small amount of transmission fluid on the lower radiator hose and that may have weakened the EPDM rubber material.
Failure point was at the juncture between the main lower radiator hose body and the branched connection.
- New transmission cooler lines ordered for both sides to be safe. No transmission fluid was noted on the concrete pavers or when parked on asphalt. Transmission fluid level was also correct (measured with metric ruler in mm per MB instructions).

2) G Dealer in Netherlands noted that part number: 463-501-06-82 may be a possible solution. Ordered two from Germany. Dealer received them in 3 days from Germany. The connection to the radiator was correct as was the branched connection to the heater line...However, the hose was too short to reach the thermostat housing.
*Please note, the new reinforced plastic shroud that connects the large diameter radiator line to the small diameter heater line. The plastic shroud is completely sealed on the ends, too.

3) I have a friend who, at 80 years old, is sharp as ever and can fix anything. He also loves cars and builds hot rods. A self-decribed "hillbilly" from Ohio who worked for Chrysler and Ford for many years after serving just after WW2. He smiled when he heard my problem and said: "Let's go get some copper tubing". We went to a good industrial plumbing supply company and bought a 10 foot section of copper pipe that fit perfectly the internal diameter of the new hose recommended to me by the dealer in Netherlands.

4) I had some spare upper radiator hoses...I attempted to fit an upper radiator hose to the new (short) lower radiator hose to make up the length difference...But I had two major problems:
A) Upper radiator hose ID was not sufficient to fit the thermostat housing...The thermostat housing connection is flared and of greater diameter than the ID of the upper radiator hose.
B) The factory lower radiator hose, as it extends vertically to reach the thermostat housing, has a radius in it to cause the hose to not contact the belts and fan clutch. This curvature/radius was not able to be replicated by the straight upper radiator hose.

5) At this point, my vehicle was disabled with no hose fitted in my mechanic's shop. He is a MB master mechanic trained in Germany and works out of a single bay. As a temporary fix so I would not take up space in his bay, we removed 4 inches (thermostat connection down) of my old and broken lower radiator hose (in an area where there was no failure) and attached it to the copper pipe connection to the new (short) radiator hose that I had ordered from Germany. We grafted part of the old hose to the new short hose with a piece of copper tubing and hose clamps in between as a temporary fix. It worked perfectly. I am not pleased with the solution but I do not want to impact his business or take up space in his shop.

6) Despite paying for DHL International Express service, my factory AMG hose from Germany has not shown up yet. And the same goes for the factory AMG hose from Japan. I wonder if there are weather delays?
P.S. If you absolutely positively need it there, always use FEDEX. UPS and DHL? Not so much...They are never on time. I do ship and receive a lot from all over. But I was not going to argue since both vendors were setup with DHL and they were doing me a favor.

7) It is nearly impossible to find any radiator hoses on a shelf in South Florida. The dealer does not stock them. The MB parts specialists do not have much (nor anything OEM quality)...Everything works off of a part number.
If you are wheeling in remote areas...make sure you carry spare hoses. Rigging something up like in the old days is becoming harder and harder.

8) The 500GE has an aluminum coolant pipe that connects both upper radiator hoses that sit on top of the radiator. The aluminum coolant pipe has a flared bead on both ends...essentially a rolled bead formed into the aluminum that prevents the hoses from slipping off. I initially thought that creating a solution like this for my lower radiator hose was akin to "rigging it"...But if AMG was willing to do it...Maybe it is not such a bad idea.
Edit: This is called a clamp bead and it is made with a tool like this: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/topages/parkerbead.php

I may need to find a hose that will fit the upper thermostat housing with a curvature in it and a reduction that matches the diameter of the lower radiator hose next.
I also need to talk to some of the manufacturers mentioned previously to determine the best path forward...A member with big knowledge MiN, who is quite technical, correctly pointed out that I have no idea of the date of manufacture and the amount of degradation of the original factory hoses I have coming. I am not sure if I will end up using them because of the 7 year shelf life rule that applies to MB hoses.

To be continued.....

Re: Need Lower Radiator Hose for 500GE

First, I hope the other DHL hoses arrive soon. One problem I have had with DHL from overseas in the past, is that DHL handed off to the US Postal service and I lost the ability to track the items. They showed up, but very late.

Today, I was looking online at lower hoses for 1990 560SEL, that have the M117 engine. The hose looked the same in a picture without the smaller branch pipe. Perhaps if you got one of these hoses, It would be the correct size for the Water pump, but you will end up with a spliced hose.

If the other hoses don't work, let's send my spare hose off to have custom hoses made.

Good luck.

Sounds good. I will order a 560SEL lower radiator hose now. I am going to my local FBO on Monday to talk to one of the Cessna mechanics also. Thank you very much.

Re: Need Lower Radiator Hose for 500GE

With all the time spent on this surely a friendly FLAPS with a good inventory of hoses could have been located by now even if it meant driving a couple hours! I know they aren't as common but I still see them around. Piecing together two new hoses w/ tubing (like your 80 year old friend suggested - regardless of the model of car they originated from) would solve this.

1) If you read through my thread, this is what we ended up doing temporarily.

2) The intent is to solve this problem for other 500GE owners, too. Not just me. We are looking at the possibility of connecting a S-Class lower radiator hose with a G-Class lower radiator hose to make an off the shelf solution.

3) AMG was fantastic and I received an email from them on 26-November, in German, that they are preparing a new hose for me with an aluminum connection piece.

I will keep this updated as to the solution.

The friendly local auto parts store solutions are never really great. The hoses they sell in most cases are not OEM quality and are from suppliers in China, etc...
It is important to have reliable cooling system hoses of good material quality and specification...And the hoses need to FIT.

Re: Need Lower Radiator Hose for 500GE

Update 1-December...From Affalterbach, with love

You have to hand it to AMG...they have real class.

26-November: (Message from AMG)

1-December:
Received a call from Affalterbach this morning (this time from the racing division) that they had a hose ready.

"The boss called and said we have a problem with a hose. So we got our G-Meister out of retirement who has some free time on his hands and he has already made a new hose for you by combining two hoses with an aluminum fitting...What is your delivery address?"

AMG had no obligation to support my "out of print" model. And yet, they did. This sort of direct support is what creates customers for life.

Next step will be to test fit this new hose and speak to Graz about stocking some of these hoses for future distribution to MB for other owners.

Re: Need Lower Radiator Hose for 500GE

This sounds like exactly what has been mentioned several times. Finding two hoses and combine. Much better then some old part that is sitting on a shelf and lower cost then trying to get one custom made to support a low production number vehicle that most would have gone the same route. Figure out which two hoses he used and make note of it. MB outsources damn near every hose, belt, accessory component, bulb, piece of rubber, etc. Selling it in a MB branded box doesn't make it any better.

Your post sums up the conclusions we have already reached and mentioned prior. For a total production volume of less than 500 models, it probably does not make sense to mold new hoses. Though it has been done in the past for some cars with even lower production numbers.

The parts that go into the MB boxes are the first quality tier parts from the manufacturers. The parts that are OE equivalent that are not in the MB box are often not warrantied. Additionally, they can be "seconds". A good example of this is injectors and the variance in quality and spray pattern. Even between MB and Bosch boxed parts.

I always buy the parts in the MB box. If not available, I will buy OE equivalent as a second best option.

It takes about 2 hours to access the lower radiator hose since the fan clutch and fan shroud must also be removed, in addition to the upper radiator hoses.
It would be foolish to use a poor quality off the shelf hose from a local auto parts store (which is not available locally for me) as the quality is not the same as the material specification that MB makes for their hoses.

I will spend a little extra and enjoy the safety margin.

The fact that AMG offered a solution is excellent as, with their experience, I am sure it will be correct. And it is coming from the man who was responsible for the AMG G-Class projects.

It is now important to help the other owners when they have this problem. So that there is an off the shelf solution. Not every owner has the experience or the know-how to combine hoses. Again, the point is to not just help me, but to help other owners when faced with this problem. This is the "big picture" as I have explained before.

Re: Need Lower Radiator Hose for 500GE

10-December Update

Affalterbach has delivered.

Kudos to TNT...The least well known of the "big four" express carriers delivered the package within a week.
My original hose ordered from Germany has yet to show up via DHL (!).

This AMG-made hose looks great. I will install it on the weekend.

Special thanks to AMG for the personal attention, close support, and amazingly fast turn-around time.

There was one other nice item in the box which I am having framed...Picture to follow.

Yes, I would be happy to. It looks exactly like the original HWA part# hose save for the fact that the new replacement hose from AMG is not a one-piece molded hose and it is joined in the center with an aluminum tube and two constant tension clamps.

I ordered an aluminum silver frame from Germany for the second part of the contents of the package. Why silver? Because silver is the German racing colour. My garage is going to have a really neat addition to its car art collection...I am looking forward to hanging this piece when the framing/matting is complete.

Gerry, you should have Fabian join P3, the other 500GE owner in Germany whose vehicle you posted pictures of.

I am speaking to Graz to determine if they are willing to stock these replacement hoses from AMG for distribution to the MB international parts network so that other owners will not end up with this problem.

Re: Need Lower Radiator Hose for 500GE

Quick update:

New Radiator Hose from AMG fitted and no leaks appear to have occurred.
I spoke to Graz and they are now determining if it is possible to re-add some of the no longer available parts to their inventory system so that they can be distributed to Mercedes. I should know more about this next week and there are a few other items aside from the lower radiator hose that I am looking at having "re-issued".

In appreciation for the efforts made and the kind support from various staff at AMG, I commissioned half a dozen coffee mugs to give as thank-you gifts to several individuals in Affalterbach who were so helpful. The mugs feature photographs of my beloved 500GE, a nice inscription in German to "AMG-Affalterbach", and a picture of the "G-Meister" who so kindly came out of retirement to "support the cause" while helping me.

Very Nice of you to have this very thoughtful gift made for them.

I'm sure very few people would even think about doing something like this for them.

Good Karma.
