W460 Fender Trim Plates

I am considering fabricating fender top plates for my W460, using 5 bar aluminum. I like the look of the 5 Bar on Land Rovers.

Thoughts? Too tacky? Any one else want a pair? How dare you soil the Germann Marque?

ORC make them for the W463, but they don't cover the whole top of the fender, and it is not the 5 bar checker.

Re: W460 Fender Trim Plates

Hm. You really planning on standing on them? I know I wouldn't. If it's not functional, I wouldn't do it. But you might use 'em, of course..?

RE: W460 Fender Trim Plates

hey, if you like it - why not

the hood needs the protection (and reinforcement) more than the fenders though
and I usually find more need to step on the hood than on the fenders (which are quite resistant to stepping on them)

RE: W460 Fender Trim Plates

I made a set, they are attached with double stick 3M emblem tape. Yes, I stand on them.
I also have Mercedes supplied walk on hood in my garage that is about to get repainted body color. I'll be able to stand on that too now.

RE: W460 Fender Trim Plates

When I made the fender plates, I accidentally stamped out 2 left plates, so I did two more (rights). Here is the extra set that went to another G owner in the SE USA.

Re: W460 Fender Trim Plates

Funnily enough, I was looking on mobile.de for some German pur wagons (pipe dreaming again...) Found this one with the plate added, doesn't look too bad IMO:

Otis,

What exactly has been done to the reinforced hood to...well...reinforce it? I am very interested in this as, like others, have frequently found the need to walk on the hood even though I have stopped myself. I step on the stock fenders from time to time though - a few scratches but no dents yet. The extra scratches aren't really noticeable given all the other scratches on my G

RE: W460 Fender Trim Plates

I made some out of checkerplate rubber with magnetic sheet on one side.
I use them when working on the engine for putting tools and parts down, to stop scratching the paint.
Take them off when driving.

I have some alumium checkerplate and will make some permanent ones someday, for the same purpose.

The G fenders are great platforms for stuff.

As inspired by Otis, I am moving forward with the checker plate. We'll see how this DIY project turns out.

Great, keep us posted on the progress.

Are those GFG ones glued to the fender? Those are nice as well.

Re: W460 Fender Trim Plates

I like the "tread plate" style more than "diamond plate" and stylistically, it will look better, too.

RE: W460 Fender Trim Plates

I would love to hear how much more weight might be on the walk on hood.

If not much I can really use one.

I am tempted to refer to the fender tread as the Otisplate.

RE: W460 Fender Trim Plates

The "otisplate" is coming along nicely. I have about 6 hours into it and only one cut finger!
