Having the 500GE interior redone

My son's 500GE has 280K miles on it and the interior was starting to show its age. He had the outside redone a few years ago and as a college graduation present, I am having the interior redone. He has chosen a quilted style that is in the newer G's. We are replacing the headliner, carpet and having all door panel's and seats recovered. He likes the all blacked out look.

Here is the first door panel.

Stitching a diamond quilted pattern is challenging. That looks really well done. Congratulations to your son as well.

Re: Having the 500GE interior redone

The person doing this is a master tech at the local MB dealer. He does a lot of their repair work and gave me what I considered a great price to do everything. The head liner looks great (no pictures right now) and I am very pleased with this first door panel. If the seats look as good, my son will be very happy.

Thank you, he graduates from Parsons School of Design in May. I could not pass up the opportunity to do everything now. When I get the G back (Before Christmas), I will post pictures of the new interior. He is also building sub speaker boxes that will sit above the rear wheel wells.

That is a very talented tech. Very cool.

Please make sure to calculate the air space correctly for the enclosure and account for the displacement of the subwoofer. It is important to follow the science if you want a good quality of sound.

And also, it would be smart to have "quick disconnects" so that the enclosure can be removed if you need to access any of the fuel lines that run under the cargo area on the 500GE (if I recall correctly, there are some in this location).

Re: Having the 500GE interior redone

I hope you'll continue to post more photos as the project progresses. I really enjoy reading the posts from you and H1 about 500GE's. Hope one day I might find one for myself.

By the way is your other 500GE still touring around my neck of the woods?

Re: Having the 500GE interior redone

Thanks WEBIII, I will post more pictures as the work is completed. My son's 500GE no longer looks stock. He painted it MB designo matte black and now the interior will be all black. He loves it and with 280K miles, it still runs like it is new. I can only hope my 2002 get's that many miles.

Yes, my Daughter is still at UA in Tuscaloosa and her best friend's parents live I Birmingham. Her 500GE is all original and looks great. You might see her driving around one day. She is now a Junior so we hope she is finished in a year and a half. Roll Tide!

RE: Having the 500GE interior redone

Its great to hear that these cars are doing so well at high miles...
We would have never thought about passing our RR to our son but it sounds like my wife's idea of passing on the G to my 7 year old would be a reasonable idea. I can't wait to see the final finished interior.

Just hope that the various onboard computers are reliable and or MB continues on with the production of them in the future.....

AGuess: It has been 3 years now. I prefer the earlier trucks...They have more soul. Thanks for the good advice way back when. I have only had one real problem thus far and it was a hose...Not too bad.

I keep my eyes open for her 500GE every time I'm in Tuscaloosa (which has been very often in the last year). Congratulations to your son, and to you -- one down, one to go
