Window Switch retainer clips

On my 93 500GE, the black plastic mounting clip, that is under the wood console cover, that the window switch presses into is broken. The switch is falling through the wood console.

Does anyone know where I can buy the replacement mounting bracket or clip?

I can't find this in the epc.

Thanks again.

Re: Window Switch retainer clips

Are you talking about on the center console where the shift levers are located?

I have not had my wooden shift console / center console out yet and have not looked underneath it.
But, to my knowledge and recollection, the wooden trim panel has a black ABS plastic lattice / matrix stapled to the back of it. This ABS plastic lattice/matrix is a one piece unit and provides the support for the switches. The black plastic support material is router-cut for the switches, etc...

I do not think it is individual pockets for the switches with a support structure / material.

I would talk to a Mercedes wood restoration company such as Madera Concepts and ask what they would do to solve that problem.

RE: Window Switch retainer clips

Not that I would necessarily recommend it, but I've seen the switches epoxied in from the back.

Re: Window Switch retainer clips

That is correct - it is a thin black piece of plastic that is stapled to the back of the center console wood piece. It is NOT available separately from MB -- you have to buy the entire piece of wood. That is not cheap.

Talking to Tony at Madera would be a good idea.

Another idea would be to get one from another vehicle, such as a W124 (which shares the switches), and adapt it and affix it to the rear of the wood with epoxy or contact cement, etc.

Or, perhaps someone has a spare piece of wood they could sell.

I would NOT epoxy the switch itself to the wood, or try a bodge job in that vein. Exhaust your options with the factory style plastic piece first. Any wrecking yard would have a 124 center console wood piece, which you could harvest a backing plastic piece from for adaptation.

I also have a source in Germany I could contact on your behalf, who may have access to used wood.

Cheers,
Gerry

Re: Window Switch retainer clips

Gerryvz: Thank you for participating and making a valuable contribution to the P3 forum.

I agree with you- The best solution would be to talk to Madera, or scrounge and modify a plastic backing piece from a W124 wood center console (with window switches). P.S. Madera has been restoring wood in classic vehicles for 20+ years.

The 500GE has a proprietary wood console and I do not believe it has an analogue to another G-Class model.

Re: Window Switch retainer clips

Yes, that is correct and I did not know if someone had developed a replacement plastic part that could be used for one switch. I will contact madera as I need to have the entire center console wood refinished to get rid of the small stress cracks. It is a good time to do it with the entire interior being removed and redone.

The restoration of these older G's is becoming quite the challenge, but I do love the hunt.

Re: Window Switch retainer clips

That is a damn good call. A Stratasys FDM printer would be able to replicate that perfectly...(and I am sure there are some less expensive alternatives that could produce a part with material structurally strong enough (ABS)

Re: Window Switch retainer clips

Alex, these window switch brackets are literally a dime a dozen. Just go to any auto junkyard and pull the wood veneer console out and pop off a switch holder, trim it down and glue or epoxy it on. Easy as pie. If you are really planning on sending it to Madera, whom I highly recommend, they can staple it on for you.

Re: Window Switch retainer clips

Otiswesty,

Yes, I am calling them tomorrow to schedule it. I also need to see if they can copy one of the wood front door trim pieces from my sons 500GE for my daughters. She managed to loose one and MB says they are no longer available.

I am going to ask if they already have the bracket, if not, I will find a junk yard and get one. Thanks. I have not been able to find any on ebay.

Re: Window Switch retainer clips

I think Otiswesty is referring to scavenging a W124 center console that was fitted with power window switches.

If you have trouble locating the wood front door trim, let me know. I think I know where you may find one or two.

Madera Concepts did the wood in the H1s for many years. Here is mine. I love the stuff that they do, and their restorations. Their prices I find to be quite fair and decent.

Re: Window Switch retainer clips

Another idea: If your son likes the "blacked out" look, it is possible to refinish the wood with a high gloss, black piano finish. This is seen on some Bentley interiors and in the interiors of some modern MB cars. The cost should be less for this finish.

I do not find it to be practical. If you are driving on the highway with the sun behind you, it has a tendency to reflect off of the wood and into your face. It looks really elegant, but it is a bit of a pain to live with. Same with the engine turned aluminum dashes that Bentley produces.

Also, this photo I took about 10 years ago shows the colour-tints that AMG offered at the time for bespoke projects where the client would select the wood and leather combinations. 10 years ago, there were only 2 men engaged at producing such specialized wood trim for AMG and Designo cars and they were independent cabinetmakers.

H1LM002G55

Thank you for the info.

1. Yes, if you know a good source for the small door wood trim pieces, let me know. It would be better than trying to make a new one. I need to call her and confirm if it is the front or rear door.

2. I am not going to mention the "black" wood option to him. I am sure he would like it. Ha.

3. Your H1 looks great.

Thanks again for everything.

Re: Window Switch retainer clips

1) Sounds good. I think the front and rear are the same. The only bias is left or right side.

2) Ha. I understand. Just sharing. But I like the "walnut burl" and the black piano finish is annoying when the sun is behind you.

3) Thanks. They do nice work and have been in business for a long time.

Here is the back of a wooden W124 center console trim panel showing the plastic "lattice work" with switch placements.

Re: Window Switch retainer clips

All 500GE interiors from factory had burled walnut wood...But it is not that dramatic to re-veneer and colour match.

Don't show this to him.
Although it could solve your refinish and missing parts problem.

Re: Window Switch retainer clips

You are correct.. I have reached out to the seller to ask if they have the ash tray with cover in Black and if all of the window switch retainer plastic clips are there and in good shape. The only other problem is this center console has a hole for the remote heater, which my sons 500GE does not have. My daughters does.

Thanks

I removed the remote heater on my G and made a storage box out of abs pieces from a abs console and used strips of abs mixed with acetone as the adhesive to secure the storage box , Then had the centre console hydro dipped in carcon fibre solution

Sorry it a wee bit dusty after the weekend

EDIT: Photo removed to be resized.
